Betty died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester.
Betty Miller was born May 26, 1923 in Albert Lea, the daughter of Thomas and Beulah (Shiffer) Johannsen. She graduated from Freeborn High School in 1941. Following high school, Betty worked at E.F. Johnson Co. in Waseca. On June 30, 1946, Betty was united in marriage to Dwight Miller at Cross of Glory Lutheran Church. The couple lived and farmed on their homestead in Hartland for over 55 years and had dairy cows for over 25 years. Betty helped with all aspects of farm life including; working in the fields, milking cows and preparing meals for farm hands. Neighbors and friends loved to stop by to sample her famous homemade cinnamon rolls.
Memorial services for Thomas Marion Kerns will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in rural Blooming Prairie, MN. Father Adam McMillan will be officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, September 4 at Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea and again one hour prior to the service at the church.
Thomas M. Kerns Sr., of Geneva, MN passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, August 29, 2015. Tom was born on November 12, 1960 to Connie (Mask) and Glen Kerns in Maricopa, Arizona. He has lived in various other states including California, Wisconsin, and most recently Minnesota. He married his wife Sarah in Myre Big Island State Park near Albert Lea on June 4, 2011. Together, they made their home in Geneva.
George Bernard Rotegard died in his home in Bloomington, Minn., of natural causes Friday, Aug. 21, 2015 at age 90.
George was born in New Richland, Minn. on Feb. 8, 1925, the third son of Bernard and Lillie Rotegard of New Richland, owners of Rotegard Drug Store. George was a very popular basketball player in his high school years as he was 6 feet, 4 inches tall and was a star player on the 1943 team. He worked in his dad's Drug Store whenever he wasn't in school from 7th grade on.
He graduated from NRHS in 1943 and was drafted into the U.S. Navy that summer. He was a Pharmacist Mate and participated in the Normandy Invasion in June of 1944. George landed the beach on the second day, picking up the wounded on stretchers, running them to safety, all with a Red Cross band on his arm. He came back on a furlough to New Richland and was reassigned to the Marine Corps. He then was sent to Okinawa and was in that invasion in the spring of 1945. After the war, he spent six months in occupation of Tientsin, China. Back home in New Richland in 1946, he worked in the drug gtore for a short time and then enrolled in the University of Minnesota Business School.
Paul Eugene Reb, 86, of Owatonna, died August 27, 2015 at Brookdale Assisted Living-Sterling House, Owatonna.
Paul was born May 6, 1929 in Albert Lea, the son of Walter and Ethel (Schwartz) Reb, who were from New Richland. Paul graduated from New Richland High School in May 1947. Paul was united in marriage to the love of his life Selma Berndt on November 10, 1948 in the Waldorf Lutheran Church and the couple shared 66 wonderful years together. He continued his education studying welding, electronics and incorporating them into lifelong experiences.

Funeral Services for Alma “Sylvia” Dodge, of New Richland, will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2015, at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Richland, Minn. The Reverend Paul Andree will officiate. Interment will be in St. Olaf Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Sylvia died on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Home in Albert Lea. She was 94.
She was born Alma Sylvia on June 18, 1921, in Freeborn County, Minnesota, the daughter of Selmer and Anna (Olson) Tukua. Sylvia graduated from New Richland High School. She married Gene C. Dodge on June 5, 1943, in Santa Ana, California. They had celebrated 70 years together before Gene died in 2013.
In addition to making a loving home for her family, Sylvia had worked beside her husband Gene as they operated Dodge’s Our Own Hardware. She also worked as funeral assistant and caretaker at Friedrich/Bonnerup Funeral Service for many years.
Funeral services for Mardelyn Lois Thompson of Ellendale, Minn., will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, August 29, 2015 at the First Lutheran Church in Ellendale, MN. Pastor Richard Sliper will officiate. Visitation will be held Friday evening August 28 from 4-7 p.m. at the church, and one hour prior to the service Saturday. Interment will be in the Ellendale Lutheran Cemetery.
Mardelyn was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven, August 25 at the Homestead Hospice House, in Owatonna, MN. She was 92 years of age, just one month short of 93.
Mardelyn was born Sept 20, 1922 at home in rural New Richland, the daughter of Clarence “Spike” and Agnes (Hagen) Thompson. She went to country school and graduated from Ellendale High School in 1940. On June 25, 1941 she was united in marriage to James M. Thompson. She lived in the Ellendale area most of her life, and the past few years at Whispering Oak in Ellendale with her husband James. Mardelyn worked locally as a secretary for a Real Estate/Insurance agency and later at Jostens and J.C. Penney for many years as an accountant retiring in 1985.
Bernice C. Patterson, 82, of Rochester, died peacefully at St. Marys Hospital on Saturday, August 15, 2015. We are blind-sided by her passing just three days after a surprise diagnosis of non-alcoholic HCC liver cancer. Because she was at peace with death and ready to be with God, we gave her our blessing to leave us now, because mom is always right.
Bernice was born March 2, 1933 in rural Hartland, Minnesota to Narvin and Gunda Olson. She graduated from Ellendale High School in 1951 and received her three-year RN diploma from Naeve School of Nursing in Albert Lea, MN in 1954. She loved working as an operating room nurse throughout her career, retiring in 1983. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting (especially scrubbies), doing crossword puzzles, and volunteering at the Senior Center. She also enjoyed watching the Twins and Vikings on TV.
Funeral services for Arlene L. Miller will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015 at 11 a.m. from Central Freeborn Lutheran Church. Pastor Matt Griggs will officiate. Arlene Loretta Miller age 83, of Clarks Grove died on August 14, 2015 at her home surrounded by family and friends.
Arlene was born at home near Geneva, MN August 23rd, 1931. She was the daughter of Eugene and Sylvia (Olson) Wright.
She attended grade school at District 103 and graduated from Freeborn High School in 1949.
Arlene worked as a Nursing Assistant at Naeve Hospital from 1949 – 1950. She then went to Owatonna Hospital and worked from 1950 until 1951.
Funeral services for John F. Supalla will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 17, 2015 at All Saints Catholic Church, New Richland. Father Raul Silva will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4–7 on Sunday at Friedrich Funeral Chapel, New Richland, as well as one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
John passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at the Parkview Care Center in Wells. He was 93 years old.
John Francis Supalla was born on June 21, 1922 to George and Adeline (Paul) Supalla, in Brush Creek, MN. He attended and graduated from Delavan High School in 1939. He worked on his family farm after graduation. On November 14, 1946, he was united in marriage to Helen (Schroeder) in Easton, MN. The family moved to New Richland in 1949, where he continued to farm until 1967. He took a job with Custom Farm Service where he was the assistant manager. He later worked for Massop Electric in Mapleton where he sold Behlen grain bins and equipment for 15 years. After that, he continued his career with Winegar Brothers in Waseca as a Machinist until retiring at the age of 82.
Ursula E. Harra, 86, of New Richland, formerly of Waseca MN, entered her eternal rest on July 26, 2015, at St. John’s Lutheran Community home in Albert Lea MN.
Ursula was born Ursula Liesbeth Martha Allstadt on July 20, 1929 in Walterhausen Germany, to John and Hildegard Geoborene Bahring Allstadt. Ursula came to the United States of America in the year 1950, and became a United States Citizen in 1960. Ursula made her way from the East Coast to Minnesota, and made Minnesota her home.
On July 22nd of 1961, Ursula married Walter Harra. They made their home in West Concord, MN. At some time, Ursula and Walt divorced, and remarried January 17, 1983, where they made Waseca their home.
Ursula worked for the E.F. Johnson Company for many years, until her retirement. After her retirement, Ursula and Walter owned and operated a craft store in Waseca, and also made their way all over Minnesota making and selling their crafts.

Marian Jean McMillan, 95, of Boynton Beach, FL, died on Monday July 20, 2015 at the Palm Beach Hospice in Delray, FL.
Marian was born in New Richland, MN on August 27, 1919, the daughter of Fred S. and H. Constance (Brynildson) Jensen. She graduated from New Richland High School in 1938 and from the Mankato School of Beauty and Culture as a beautician at the beginning of World War II. Upon graduation, she and her sister, Doris, opened the Modern Beauty Shop in New Richland. On January 23, 1946, she married Paul J McMillan (a survivor of the Bataan Death March and a P.O.W.) at the New Richland Congregational Church, with his father officiating.
Marian continued her career as a hairdresser until her retirement, having had shops in her home in Janesville and in LeSueur, MN. After they retired, the McMillans moved to Bella Vista, AK where they lived for six years before moving to Boynton Beach, FL in 1999 to be closer to their daughter, her husband, and their four precious grandchildren.

Bonita died surrounded by her family on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at the New Richland Care Center.
She was born on December 8, 1920, the daughter of Gustav C. and Lydia C. (Kietzer) Frank.
Bonita was born in Mankato, but her father died when she was 2, and when her mother remarried, the family moved and she grew up in Blackduck, MN. She was a graduate of Blackduck High School and then attended beauty school in Mankato. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Harold Ackman, and they were married on November 18, 1943 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Richland. Harold and Bonita lived, farmed, and raised their family northwest of New Richland. She used her beauty schooling to style the hair of her family and neighbors out of her home throughout the years.
Evelyn L. Standke, age 89 of New Richland died on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at the New Richland Care Center.
Born on December 12, 1925 in Byron Township, Waseca County, Minnesota, she was the daughter of Thomas and Mabel (Klemmensen) Anderson. She attended school in Owatonna and married Karl R. Standke Sr. on January 2, 1944 in Faribault. Over the years, Evelyn was employed with Birds Eye, E.F. Johnson Co., the Waseca Hospital, Tom’s Shoe Shop, and the New Richland Care Center. Evelyn enjoyed cooking, baking, reading and sewing. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Waseca, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Senior Citizens.
The funeral service for Kernel Knudson will be held Wednesday, July 29 at 11a.m. at Cross of Glory Lutheran Church, Hartland. Rev. Dr. Mark Hillmer will officiate. Interment will be in Hartland Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 28 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea, and one hour before the service at church.
Kernel died July 25, 2015 at Prairie Senior Cottages, Albert Lea, surrounded by his family. He was 16 days shy of his 90th birthday.
Kernel was born on August 10, 1925, on the Knudson farm homesteaded by his grandfather, Kittel, to Carl and Clara (Thofson) Knudson. He attended country school and graduated salutatorian from Freeborn High School, giving up his scholarship to the University of Minnesota because of family responsibilities.
