Remembering the life of Ethel A. Olson
Funeral Services for Ethel Annabelle Olson, of Albert Lea, formerly of Hartland, were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 9, 2015 at Cross of Glory Lutheran Church in Hartland. The Rev. Dr. Mark Hillmer officiated.Interment was in Hartland Cemetery, Hartland, MN. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea, and one hour before the service at the church.
Ethel died on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at Prairie Senior Cottages in Albert Lea. She was 92.
She was born on October 3, 1922, in Albert Lea, the daughter of A.J. (Jim) and Evelyn “Eva” (Montanye) Pirkl. She grew up in the Geneva community and attended country school. She graduated from Ellendale High School with the class of 1941 and then attended business school in Minneapolis.
Avis Marie Anderson, age 79, of New Richland, MN, died Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the New Richland Care Center. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in New Richland, MN. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, February 6 at the Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be at the Freeborn Cemetery, and Pastor Paul Andree will officiate. Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home of Wells is in charge of arrangements. Dale C. Ewest, age 77 of Waseca, died on Sunday, February 1, 2015 at his home in Wilton Township, Waseca County, Minnesota.
Born on October 28, 1937 in Waseca, Minnesota, he was the son of Clarence and Elsie (Cook) Ewest. He attended school in rural Wilton Township. Dale farmed in Wilton Township for many years where he raised pigs and sheep. He also worked at the Dahle Sod Farm for several years. Dale enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church – Wilton.
He is survived by neighbors, Brad and Lisa Mens and their children, Mitch, Ted, Joe, Anna, Grace, Daniel and Thomas of Waseca.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at 3 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church-Wilton with Rev. Larry Sipe officiating. Burial will follow at Woodville Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, one hour before services at the church. Dennis Funeral & Cremation Services of Waseca is handling arrangements.

A memorial service for Lois Clausen will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at LeSueur River Lutheran Church, rural New Richland. The Reverend Brian Gegel will officiate. Visitation will start at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the church, and continue until the start of the service. Interment will take place at the LeSueur River Cemetery following the service.
Lois died on January 27, 2015 in Winter Haven, FL. She was 75 years old.
Lois was born on April 21, 1939 to Raymond and Agnes (Olson) Brandvold in Waseca, MN. She was a lifetime member of LeSueur River Lutheran Church, where she was baptized, confirmed, and married. She attended country school around New Richland, and later graduated from New Richland High School where she met her best friend and now sister in-law, Barb Loken Clausen. After school, she received her degree from Secretarial School in Mankato. Lois married the love of her life, Ronald Clausen, on July 9, 1960 at the LeSueur River Lutheran Church. The couple moved to California, where Ronald was stationed in the military. A year later, the couple moved back to New Richland, the place they will always call home. Lois worked as an Executive Secretary for E.F. Johnson in Waseca for over 35 years.
James Raymond Miller, age 77 of Waseca, died on Friday, January 30, 2015 as a respite patient at Rivers Edge Hospital in St. Peter.
Born on February 27, 1937 in Wilton Township, Waseca County, Minnesota, he was the son of Raymond A. and Esther (Kaiser) Miller. He attended rural Waseca County School District #22 before graduating from New Richland High School. He later received his Associate’s Degree from the U of MN-Waseca. After high school, Jim served in the US Navy in the Pacific. He had been stationed on the USS Brinkley Bass DD887. Jim married Juanita Steege on June 20, 1959 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Pine Island. Jim worked at Midland Elevator in Waseca from the late 1950s to the early 1960s. He later worked as a boiler engineer at Mankato State University for 33 years before retiring in 2001. Jim also farmed the family farm for 41 years.
Laurene M. Sommers, 95, of Owatonna, Minnesota, died Friday, January 23, 2015 at the New Richland Care Center.
Laurene was born January 24, 1919 in Williston, North Dakota the daughter of Henry and Amanda (Stonke) Hanson. The family moved to Lemond Township in 1929. She graduated from Ellendale High School in 1936 and Mankato State Teachers College in 1938. Laurene taught country school in Lemond Township for 3 years. Laurene married Bernie Sommers on November 15, 1941 at the Methodist Church in Ellendale. They farmed in Lemond Township. In addition to raising children, and helping on the farm, Laurene worked at Federated Insurance for 3 years. Bernie passed away on June 2, 1979. Laurene went to work as a Home Health Aid for 11 years. In 1994, she moved to Owatonna.
She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church. She served as Sunday School Superintendent, taught Sunday school, active in Ladies Aid and played the church organ for over 50 years. She was also instrumental in creating church programs along with writing poems for others. Laurene was also a member of Extension Club, 4-H Leader, and 4-H parent for 20 years. While her children were in school she was on the Mother’s Club at country school. Laurene loved her family and was dedicated to her grandchildren.
Gail Ann Rysavy 1957 – 2015
Geneva, MN – Gail Ann Rysavy, age 57, of Geneva passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Friday January 23, 2015.
She was born on March 19, 1957 in Owatonna, MN to Ludwig and Colleen Borchert. Gail was raised south of Owatonna and graduated from Owatonna High School in 1975. She was united in marriage to Michael John Rysavy in June of 1977.
Gail enjoyed helping students learn while working at NRHEG schools. She worked the past 17 years at Cabela’s retail store in Owatonna. Gail enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She always had a smile on her face and approached everything with a positive attitude. Her various hobbies included: flower gardening, attending craft shows, going camping, playing games, and cruising in the Mustang.
Funeral services for James “Jim” E. Bushlack of New Richland, MN, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at the All Saints Catholic Church in New Richland, MN. Father Adam McMillan will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. Monday, January 26, 2015 at the Friedrich Funeral Home in New Richland and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Richland.
James died Thursday, January 22, 2015 at the Albert Lea Good Samaritan Center. He was 79 years of age.
Jim was born July 21, 1935 in Faribault County the son of Joseph and Clara (Dulas) Bushlack. He served his country in the US Army from 1955 thru 1957. On May 5, 1959 he was united in marriage to Lois L. Schulz at St Casmir Catholic Church in Wells, MN.

Betty passed from this world on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea, MN, at the age of 72.
Betty was born on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1942 at the University of Minnesota Hospital, the daughter of Algot (“Jack”) and Edith (Lamprecht) Jackson of Minneapolis, MN. She started and ended her life at the University of Minnesota with the donation of her body to science.
Memorial services for Donald Keith Batt, age 81, of Hartland will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the Hartland Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. Marvin Sanford Swenson, 89 of Waseca, died on Monday, January 12, 2015 at Mayo Clinic Health System – Mankato.
Born in Waseca County, MN on August 8, 1925, Marvin was the son of Carl and Hilda (Larson) Swenson. He grew up on a farm in Otisco Township and was baptized and confirmed at the Vista Covenant Church. He attended school at District 48, Otisco Township and later graduated from New Richland High School in 1943. He served in the US Navy at the end of World War II as a radioman aboard the USS Adams. Marvin married Delores Peterson and they lived on the family farm in Otisco Township where they raised four children before divorcing. He then married Phyllis Meyers and later divorced. On December 20, 1975, he married Winifred Halverson. Together they resided in Otisco until moving to Waseca in 1999. Occupations throughout his lifetime included farming, creamery work, salesman for National Motor Club, manager for Midland Co-Op, shipping clerk for Mishek Company, and long time manager of the Waseca F.O.E. club. Marvin was an avid sports fan who played baseball for the New Richland Cardinals and also played on many softball teams. He also bowled one perfect 300 game in March of 1977. He loved playing cards, pool, and word games.
Ann M. Klemmensen, 85, of Ellendale, died Sunday, January 11, 2015 at Koda Living Community.
Ann was born August 23, 1929 on the family farm in Berlin Township, Minnesota, the daughter of Henry and Clara (Anderson) Thompson. She was baptized on September 22, 1929 and confirmed her faith on June 18, 1944. She attended and graduated from Ellendale High School. Ann was united in marriage to Donald “Bill” Klemmensen on June 11, 1947. The couple farmed on Ann’s family farm for many years. Bill died December 20, 2011.
Ann was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Ellendale where she taught Sunday school and was also a member of the church choir. She was an avid reader. Music played a great part of her life. She particularly enjoyed old time music and she taught herself how to play the harmonica. She enjoyed quilting and dancing and enjoyed spending time with her coffee friends. Most importantly though was her family. She loved being with them at every opportunity. Bill and Ann enjoyed their travels to Europe, Asia, Hawaii, South America, and Caribbean Cruises.
Stanley LeRoy Degen, 82, of Owatonna, died Sunday, January 11, 2015 at Mayo Clinic Hospital St. Mary's Campus.
He was born August 13, 1932 in, Shell Lake, WI the son of Lyman and Fern (Blood) Degen . He attended country school in Steele County, and worked as a truck driver hauling milk for many years, he later moved to California. Stanley served in the United States Army from 1953-1955. He married Inez Johnson on December 31, 1995 in Bullhead --City, AZ; the couple had been together fifteen years prior to their marriage. They lived in Golden Valley, AZ for twenty years before returning to Owatonna in 2004. Stan was a member of the VFW and American Legion and he served on the Steele County Military Funeral Unit.
He is survived by his wife Inez Degen of Owatonna, daughter, Jodi (and Jason) Schroeder of Owatonna, five grandchildren and four step children.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A private family service was held at Michaelson Funeral Home.

Samuel passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at the Koda Assisted Living Center. He was 98 years old.
Samuel B. Worrell was born on August 24, 1916 to Boyd and Gladys Worrell, just outside of State Center, IA. He spent his childhood around that area. He was baptized on June 11, 1932 in a Lutheran Church in State Center, IA. He was confirmed the very next day.
