For a large part, last week was unfortunate for NRHEG baseball. But it also included an impressive win.

The Panthers made a long road trip east on Tuesday and came home from Zumbrota-Mazeppa — head coach Drew Paukert’s alma mater — with a 4-1 triumph.

It was sandwiched between losses to United South Central and WEM, dropping NRHEG’s record to 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the Gopher Conference after a 0-5 start.

Dempsey Tucker was the story at Zumbrota. The senior ace pitched a complete game, allowing the Cobras one earned run on three hits, striking out two and walking three.

When you win at Byron, they give you the shirts off their backs.

NRHEG’s Hailey Schuller, Caitlin Goette, Marnie Wagner and Maddie Wagner found out, teaming for first in the 4x200-meter relay last Thursday as the NRHEG girls’ track and field team took fifth in the Chuck Ranthum Invitational.

“This was a great meet for us, going up against the biggest and toughest teams from Section 1A,” said coach Duey Ferber. “Byron and Stewartville are powerhouses. Our 4x200 came away with a win and a T-shirt.”

Byron won with 181 points, with Stewartville second at 138. The Panthers had 38.

The NRHEG girls’ golf squad finished first in a four-team field at Riverview Thursday, May 5.

The Panthers won with 212 strokes for nine holes. USC had 229, Maple River 260. Blooming Prairie didn’t have a full crew.

Grace Logan, the Panthers’ No. 5 golfer in the lineup, shot a 48 to lead not only NRHEG but take medalist honors. Ryley Koziolek, playing in the No. 6 slot, shot a 50. Kyra Possin and Tali Wayne rounded out the scoring with 57s. Bayli Possin and Jessica Nafe also played.

The NRHEG boys played at Blooming Prairie Country Club Tuesday, May 3 and were fifth out of five teams with 218 for nine holes. Blooming Prairie had 167, Maple River 176, USC 181, Bethlehem Academy 193.

Scoring for the Panthers: Atom Oquist, 50; Chris Stenzel, 53; Nick Shultz, 56; Aaron, 59.

The medalist was Tommy Braaten of Blooming Prairie with a 39.
