Remembering the life of Jerry J. Johannsen
Jerry James Johannsen was born on December 13, 1940 in Freeborn County, Minnesota, the son of William C. and Beverly (Gilbertson) Johannsen.
Jerry served our country in the U.S. Army from 1959, until his honorable discharge from the Reserves in 1965.
He acquired technical training at the Vo-Tech in Albert Lea, Minn.
Throughout his life he had worked as a machinist with a boiler license, repaired televisions, and semi-driving combined with farming.
Funeral Services for Donald O. Peterson, of Otisco, MN, were held at 1 p.m., Friday, February 8, 2013 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Otisco, MN. The Reverend Scott Williams officiated. Interment was in St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Richland. Military Honors were accorded by New Richland Veteran’s Organizations. Friends visited with family one hour before the service at the church. Friedrich Funeral Home, New Richland is assisting the family.
Donald died on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the New Richland Care Center. He was 92 years of age. He was born on February 4, 1921, in Otisco, Minnesota, the son of Oscar and Bessie Peterson. Don grew up on a farm outside of Otisco and attended Country School #47. In 1939, he graduated from Waseca High School. He went to California for a short time and then was drafted to serve our country as an airplane mechanic in the U.S. Air Force in 1942. He received his honorable discharge in 1946.
Lucille “Lucy” (Lee) Goodnature, 91, died February 1, 2013, at the Elderwood Assisted Living Facility in Hinckley, MN.
Lucille Marie Lee was born at home on December 30, 1921, in Moscow Twp., Freeborn County, MN to Peter and Ella Lee. Lucille graduated from Albert Lea High School. She married Lester Goodnature on August 20, 1952, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Newry Twp., Freeborn County, MN. They made their home in Geneva, MN, where she worked as a teller at the Geneva State Bank until retirement, whereupon Lucille and Lester relocated to Mesa, AZ. After Lester’s death in 2006, Lucille returned to MN to be closer to family.
Erwin Johannes Eichhorst, age 91, of Waldorf, MN died Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the Janesville Nursing Home. Funeral Services will be held Monday, February 11, at 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Waldorf, MN. Rev. Michael Mathews will officiate and interment will be in First Lutheran Cemetery in Waldorf, MN. Visitation will be held at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells on Sunday, February 10, 2013 from 2-5 p.m. and will continue 1 hour prior to the funeral service at church on Monday. Funeral services for Jean C. Johnson of Ellendale, MN, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at the First Lutheran Church in Ellendale, MN. The Reverend Richard Sliper will officiate. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Bonnerup Funeral Service in Ellendale, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery, Ellendale.
Mrs. Johnson died on Friday, January 25, 2013 at the Thorne Crest Retirement Center in Albert Lea, MN. She was 88 years of age.
Jean was born July 13, 1924 in Graceton, MN, the daughter of John and Clara (Huseby) Koranda. She attended public school.
Herbert Calvin Gahler was born on May 23, 1928, in Freeborn Township, Waseca County, Minnesota. He was the son of Herman and Laura (Roeker) Gahler. Herb was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed as a youth. He received his education at area rural schools in Waseca County and was a graduate of Waldorf High School.
In 1950, Herb was drafted into the United States Army. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1952.
Memorial services for Darrell Lowell Christensen of Albert Lea, MN, are pending with Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea, MN. Interment will be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Mpls, MN.
Darrell passed away on January 5, 2013 at the Mayo Health Systems Albert Lea after a long battle with many medical issues.
The celebration of life for Cherri G. Bergland will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Vibrant Life Assembly of God Church in Ellendale. Pastor Patrick Stitt will officiate. Visitation will be held from 9-10:30 at the church and interment will be in the Berlin Cemetery.
Cherri passed away on Tuesday January 1, 2013 surrounded by her family. She was 63 years old.
Cherri was born on February 22, 1949 in Owatonna, MN to Joe and Terrence (Erickson) Anderson. She attended Ellendale-Geneva School. On May 24, 1969 she was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Bergland, and raised two children on the Anderson Family Farm, which the two took great pride in maintaining. Together Bob and Cherri owned and operated Bob Bergland Excavating.
Mary A. Spinler, 87, of Owatonna passed away on Dec. 31, 2012 at the Owatonna Hospital.
Mary was born on Oct. 15, 1925 to Edward and Agnes (Rajnet) Rysavy near Bixby in Blooming Prairie Township. She attended rural school district #64 and graduated from Blooming Prairie High School in 1943. Prior to marriage she did clerical work for Jostens. On July 9, 1947 she married Justin Spinler at Holy Trinity Church, Litomysl. Following marriage, they settled on a dairy farm in Summit Township; Mary enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom and raising her own family.
Leon John Koziolek, age 79, of Freeborn/Hartland, MN, died Sunday, December 30, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family. He had given an anatomical gift to Rochester Mayo. A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, January 4th, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Wells, MN. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 3rd , 2013 from 4-7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Rosary Service at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Memorial services for Leslie A. Hagen of Joplin, MO, formerly of New Richland, MN, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in New Richland. Pastor Paul Andree will officiate. Friends may greet the family one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in St Olaf Cemetery, New Richland.
Leslie died December 22, 2012 in his motor home while traveling from Joplin, MO, where he resided since his retirement.
Leslie was born in New Richland, MN, where he grew up. After serving in the US Army, he wed Gladys Schroeder from Owatonna and resided in Owatonna, MN, where he built a new home and had his own rendering truck. He then moved back to New Richland, MN, and purchased his father’s farm on the west side of New Richland. He farmed for several years and drove semi for Tipton Trucking and Shurson Trucking. He put his own truck on the pea viner, did custom corn picking but was most known for driving school bus which he loved for many years. He and his wife also owned an Old Time band called the “Hagen’s Merrymakers” and at one time owned a bar/supper club in Glenville, MN.
Kathryn A. LeBeau, 75, of Blooming Prairie, died Friday, December 28, 2012 at St. Mary's Hospital after a five-year diagnosis with Amyloidosis.
She was born September 2, 1937 in Buckingham, IA the daughter of Herman and Frances (Wilkinson) Johns. In 1949 the family moved to the farm in Blooming Prairie. Kathryn graduated from Blooming Prairie High School in 1955. Richard “Dick” Cory and Kathryn were married on July 21, 1955. Kathryn completed cosmetology school and opened a salon in Medford. Kathryn married Robert “Bob” LeBeau on September 26, 1975. Kathryn worked at OTC for several years and then 25 years at NAPA distribution center, from which she retired.
Thomas A. Ribbe, age 62, formerly of New Richland, died on Friday, December 28, 2012 at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato.
Born on December 4, 1950 in Owatonna, Minnesota he was the son of Orrin and Inez (Jacobson) Ribbe. He graduated from New Richland High School in 1969 and served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam where he served until his honorable discharge in 1971. He married Deanna Cooper on June 4, 1977 at St. John Lutheran Church in Waseca and they were later divorced. He was employed as an over the road truck driver for several companies and later worked for Brown Printing Co. in Waseca for almost 20 years. He later worked a variety of jobs until his health forced him to retire. He enjoyed spending time with his family, helping his friend farm in the New Richland area, maps and geography, and WWII history. He was a member of the American Legion in Waseca and New Richland and the Waseca VFW and the NRA.
Walter Anderson peacefully left his earthly home on Friday, December 21, 2012 at the age of 87 years. A memorial service will be held on Saturday December 29, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Freeborn Congregational Church. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church. Interment will be at a later time at the Freeborn Cemetery.
Walter Peter Anderson was born on June 13, 1925 to Andrew and Carrie (Nofksgar) Anderson near Matawan, MN. Walt was the sixth of seven children, growing up in the Freeborn and Matawan area. Walt spent his entire life in the Freeborn area. He married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Quinn, on July 3, 1945. Together they had one son, Terry.
