Remembering the life of Jerry J. Johannsen

Jerry James Johannsen was born on December 13, 1940 in Freeborn County, Minnesota, the son of William C. and Beverly (Gilbertson) Johannsen. 

Jerry served our country in the U.S. Army from 1959, until his honorable discharge from the Reserves in 1965.

He acquired technical training at the Vo-Tech in Albert Lea, Minn.

Throughout his life he had worked as a machinist with a boiler license, repaired televisions, and semi-driving combined with farming.

His hobbies included playing games with his family and grandchildren, target shooting, riding motorcycle, playing various computer games and cards. He played guitar, enjoyed cutting and splitting wood and blowing snow. He worked on cars, etc., and was always fixing something (teaching the grandchildren as he did it).

Jerry died on Friday, February 8, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. He was 72.

He is survived by his wife Judy, daughters: Dawn (Steven) Raatz, Kristina Johannsen and Jeri Ann Wobschall all of New Richland; grandchildren: Cody Raatz of Faribault, Colton Raatz of Waseca and Randy Raatz of New Richland, Joshua Burdick of Mankato, Kali (Matthew) Wiese of Gilmore City, IA, and Brooke, Bradley and Ashley Wobschall of New Richland; great grandson Aven Wiese of Gilmore City, IA; his mother Beverly Johannsen of Albert Lea, Jeanine (Larry) Staines of Okoboji, IA, Warren (Linda) Johannsen of Twin Lakes, Dale (Dixie) Johannsen of Freeborn, Jill Witter of Albert Lea, sister-in-law Gerda Johannsen of Northfield, and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father William C. Johannsen, infant grandson, baby boy Raatz,

brother Bill “Jr.” Johannsen and sister Julie Supalla and her husband Ed.

Private services will be held on Tuesday February 12, with Military Honors and interment at St. Peter’s Cemetery in New Richland.
