The NRHEG boys' basketball team can finally notch one in the win column, the first of NRHEG head coach Dan Schmidt's varsity career.
The Panthers split a pair of road games last week, defeating Medford 76-55, and losing to Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 68-55.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the first half on Tuesday, with neither the Tigers nor the Panthers gaining more than a four-point edge. Turnovers, specifically in the lane, significantly hampered the Panthers, who led by 3 at halftime.

The NRHEG wrestling team’s woes continued in its final home meet of the year, a 59-13 loss to Medford. It was the final home meet for seniors Makota Misgen and Aden Berg.
Misgen’s season continues to impress as his journey back to the state tournament continues.
Berg, in his final home meet, stole the show, earning a fall.
In total, the Panthers tallied four
good wins on the evening, by freshman Jacob Karl at 106 pounds, senior Misgen at 285, eighth-grader Ryan Schlaak at 152; and Berg at 220.
“Going into this match we knew that Medford is a very good team, and they proved it tonight,” NRHEG coach Shawn Larson said. “I thought that we competed well in a tough situation. It is my hope that we are willing to bring the fight in our upcoming matches, like I felt we did tonight for the most part.”

The NRHEG High School girls' basketball team improved to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in the Gopher Conference last week, defeating Medford 76-39 and WEM 54-46 before dropping a 75-55 decision to Dover-Eyota.
Hosting Medford Tuesday, Jan. 10, the girls put the Tigers down early, jumping to a 31-point halftime advantage.
“We were able to get up big in the first half with some scrappy defense, and we were aggressive on offense,” said NRHEG coach Onika Peterson. “After we got ahead, our energy and defense dropped off in the second half. We will need to adjust that to prepare for WEM.”
Peterson offered her congratulations to Hallie Schultz for winning the “ExCEL Award.” The Minnesota State High School League ExCEL Award stands for Excellence in Community, Education, and Leadership. The annual award recognizes high school juniors who are active in fine arts and athletic activities, who show leadership qualities, and who are model citizens in their communities. Also winning the award from NRHEG was George Roesler.
