Hayfield hands NRHEG basketball girls first conference loss, 58-56

The NRHEG girls' basketball team suffered its first conference loss to Hayfield in heartbreaking fashion Friday night, losing on the final basket of the game, a layup in the paint as time expired.

“The girls played their hearts out,” NRHEG coach Onika Peterson said. “It came down to the final seconds, but Hayfield pulled it out. Hopefully, we can get a second chance at them in a couple weeks.”

In what is likely a precursor to the conference championship game in a couple weeks, the Panthers fell 5856 at home. The game, also a rematch of last year’s conference championship game, which the NRHEG girls also lost, looked like it was going the Panthers way, well, right up until the end.

“It’s great to see these athletes achieving success,” says Joni Churchill, one of four coaches for NRHEG’s competitive cheerleading team. “They’ve given their all, and it’s brought them recognition.”

The 15-member team won its third straight state championship on January 28, and will be taking part in a national competition in Orlando on Feb. 10. The state title, however, is not what opened the pathway for their trip to the Sunshine State. That happened last October during a qualifying event held in Minnetonka. Team members have been preparing ever since.

It has not been an easy season for the NRHEG High School wrestling team.

But it got a little better last week.

The Panthers picked up a big Gopher Conference victory, defeating Triton 43-26 at Dodge Center Thursday, Jan. 26.

"I am very happy for our team tonight," said Panthers coach Shaun Larson. "They have been working hard lately and it is nice for them to have earned a win."
