They're getting closer.

But the first win of the season remains just out of reach for the NRHEG basketball boys.

The Panthers remained winless on the season the first for head coach Dan Schmidt as they fell to Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton and dropped three games in the Bethany Holiday Tournament in Mankato.

The closest the Panthers came to tasting victory was in the seventh-place tournament game, where they were edged 56-54 by Fairmont. NRHEG kept it close despite giving up a good size advantage.

"I couldn't be more proud of how the boys played," said Schmidt, whose team trailed 27-21 at halftime.

"Coming out of the half, we once again took a shot to the chin, with Fairmont building the lead to 13," said Schmidt.

Over the holiday break, the NRHEG girls' basketball team finished second in its tournament and suffered the first loss of the season over the three-game stretch.

The Panthers remained undefeated with blowout wins over JWP 73-27 and Minnesota Valley Lutheran 80-38. They lost to LCWM in the championship game of their holiday tournament, falling 58-35 in New Richland.

The Panthers traveled to Janesville on Dec. 20, and handily defeated the Bulldogs after jumping out to a 4116 lead.

“We came out very aggressive, and got the tempo going in our favor,” NRHEG coach Onika Peterson said. “I think we pushed JWP into a faster game than what they would have liked. It was a nice team win going into the Christmas vacation.”

The Waseca boys’ basketball team went back into the positive after hosting two close games against Big South Conference rivals this past week.

Waseca 78, St. James 71

Waseca’s first Big South opponent was St. James on Tuesday, January 4.

The Jays jumped ahead to an early 22-8 lead in the first half. Before long, however, St. James caught back up. Waseca held a 46-29 lead at halftime. Head Coach Seth Anderson said he felt satisfied with the team defense’s performance in the first half.

But in the second half, things got scary for the Bluejays. Their defense started to bend against the Saints, giving untimely penalties to allow for plenty of free-throw opportunities. Because of that, St. James outscored Waseca by ten in the latter half.
