Funeral services for Stanley J. Herbst will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Richland.  Pastor Paul Andree will officiate.  Visitation will be from 5 – 7 on Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, as well as one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.  Burial will be in St. Olaf Cemetery.

Stanley passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at The Beacon at New Richland.  He was 93 years old.

Stanley Joseph Herbst was born on February 7, 1925 to John and Inga (Johnson) Herbst in New Richland Township, “in the Northwest Corner!”  He was a lifetime resident of New Richland and lived in the same house for over 90 years, before going to The Beacon.  On October 13, 1948, Stanley was united in marriage to Doris (Paulson) at Le Sueur River Lutheran Church, New Richland.  The couple was blessed with four children: LeAnn, John, Marsha, and Kevin.  

Imery “Gene” Millang, age 73, of Freeborn, MN, died Monday, September 10, 2018 at his home. A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells, MN with Rev. Scott Williams officiating. Visitation will be Friday, September 14 from 4 – 7 PM at Bruss-Heitner Funeral  Home in Wells and will continue one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Interment will be at Freeborn Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Freeborn American Legion Post #552. Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells is assisting the family. Imery Gene was born January 11, 1945 in Thompson, IA, the son of Irone and Eunice (Hove) Millang. He was one of 11 children. Gene graduated from Freeborn High School in 1963, and went on to attend the University of Minnesota for 2 years until he was drafted into the service. He honorably served our country in the US Army from February 1966 – August 1968 in Vietnam.

Memorial Services for Margella L. Besser of Waterville, formerly of New Richland, and Albert Lea, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 7,  at LeSueur River Lutheran Church in rural New Richland. The Reverend Brian Gegel will officiate.  Interment will be in LeSueur River Lutheran Cemetery.  Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.

Margella died on Tuesday at Traditions Assisted Living in Waterville, Minnesota. She was 86.

She was born on June 15, 1932, in Waseca County, the daughter of Lewis and Alice (Halvorson) Bakken.

She grew up on the farm,  helped with farm chores and was the only girl in the family who learned to drive the tractor.

Funeral services for Ralph were held Sunday, September 9, 2018 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in New Richland, MN. Pastor Scott Williams officiated. Interment was Monday, September 10 at Freeborn Cemetery.

Ralph E. Malakowsky died on September 5, 2018 at his home near Hartland, Minnesota. He was 75 years old. Ralph was born on January 12, 1943 in Albert Lea, MN to parents Carl and Irene (Syring) Malakowsky. He was raised in Minnesota Lake and then moved to the Hartland/Freeborn area. Ralph graduated from Freeborn High School where he played football and basketball.

On December 21, 1963 he married Mary Kay Hoogenraad in Minnesota Lake, MN. Together they raised their children near Hartland. The Malakowsky family became members of St. Peter Lutheran Church in New Richland. Ralph enjoyed teaching Sunday School, serving on Church Council, and being a Deacon.

Ralph started milking dairy cows when he was 4 or 5 years old and continued to be a dairy farmer until the day he died. Throughout the years, Ralph was involved with various agricultural organizations including 4-H, FFA, and the Creamery Board. 

Mr. Martin Gene “Marty” Battenfeld, age 70 of Bowling Green, KY, passed away Monday, August 27, 2018 at the Hospice House of Bowling Green, KY.

Arrangements are under the direction of Gilbert Funeral Home. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 1, 2018 at the Green River Union Cemetery in Richardsville, KY.

Martin was born November 10, 1947 in Waseca, MN. To the late Fred Edgar Battenfeld and the late Gladys Inga Morgensen Battenfeld.  He was the husband of the late Lula M. Calvert Battenfeld. Two brothers Russ and Eddie Battenfeld preceded him in death.

He is survived by his daughters Sheila Battenfeld of Portland, TN., Marcia Meador (Jimmy) of Franklin, KY and Sara Minnicks (John) of Bowling Green, KY.  Also surviving are 4 children from his 2nd wife, Wayne Guess (Dawn) of Scottsville, KY, Debbie Onley(Chuck) of Washington, Wayne Miller of McMinnville, TN and Tina Miller of Bowling Green, KY, a brother Bob Battenfeld of New Richland, MN, a sister Connie Mocha of New Richland, MN, grandchildren Ale, Lillian, Natalie and Olivia Minnicks, Katie and Kyle King, and Lula Mae Onley, Rosie Guess and Jamie Onley and 3 great grandchildren.
