Leah was born on January 19, 1923, in Waseca County, Minnesota, the daughter of Cyrus and Ollie (Hogenkamp) Routh. She was united in marriage to Harlan Berg on June 12, 1940, in northern Iowa, sharing more than 73 years before Harlan died in 2013. Leah and Harlan made their life on a farm near New Richland, where they raised their family and she worked beside him. She also worked at EF Johnson in Waseca for more than 15 years. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in New Richland where she had been active with the church women’s group. Throughout their life Leah and Harlan enjoyed dancing at the Eagle’s Club, camping, and wintering in Arizona for more than 20 years. They retired from farming in 1984, moved to Hartland and then in 2008 moved to New Richland. Leah died peacefully on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at the New Richland Care Center.
Leah is survived by nine children: Wayne Curtis (Suzanne) Berg of Mesa, AZ, Gary Lee(Lorraine) Berg of Mesa, AZ, Kay LaVonne (Pat) Adams of Owatonna, Rodney Harlan Berg (special friend Pam) of Albert Lea, Neil Robert (Bobbi) Berg of Kirbyville, MO, Larry Dean (Mary) Berg of rural Hartland, Bruce Alan (Patty) Berg of rural New Richland, LaJean Carol (Jim) Westeng of rural Clarks Grove, Burton Dale (Connie) Berg of New Richland; 27 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; sister: Jean (Keith) Wilkenson of Red Wing, MN, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for David E. Wenzel of New Richland, MN, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the Church of All Saints in New Richland, MN. Father Michael Cronin will officiate. Visitation will be held Saturday morning from 9 until the time of the service. Interment will be in the LeSueur River Cemetery, New Richland.
David died Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at the Prairie Senior Cottages in New Richland, MN. He was 89 years of age.
David was born December 2, 1929 in Waseca County the son of Frank and Pearl (Wood) Wenzel. He graduated from New Richland High School in 1947. David served his country in the US Army. On August 11, 1951 he was united in marriage to Joan Johnson at Ft Lewis Washington. Together they lived in Tacoma, WA for two years before moving to New Richland. In 1956 they moved to Minneapolis, MN, returning to New Richland in 1964. David was baptized and confirmed at the All Saints Church in New Richland where he remained a member.

Memorial service for Elaine Cynthia Johnson of New Richland will be on Friday, May 10 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Richland. Friends may visit with family one hour before services at the church. Burial will be at LeSueur Lutheran Church Cemetery at a later time.
Elaine was born on July 11, 1922 in Waseca County, Minnesota and was the daughter of Gerhardt and Clara Hatle. She passed away on April 26 at the New Richland Care Center. She was 96 years old. She was united in marriage to Lloyd Johnson on December 5, 1949.
Elaine had worked as a waitress at the Fox Inn, operated and cooked for Johnson’s Cafe and cooked at the New Richland Bowling Alley. She later worked at EF Johnson’s in Waseca as well as Friedrich’s Furniture Store in New Richland.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in New Richland where she served on the Altar Guild. Elaine was a talented seamstress and enjoyed baking bread and making lefse. She loved music, dancing and making people laugh.

H. Eulalie Smestad, 90, of Northfield, Minnesota, passed away Friday, April 26, at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Helen Eulalie Fagerholt was born March 5, 1929 in Grafton, North Dakota to Albert C. and Clara (Brende) Fagerholt. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing education from the University of Minnesota in 1952.
Eulalie married Lowell Smestad on August 10, 1952, after which they served parishes in rural Mankato, Minnesota; Orofino and Kamiah, Idaho; New Richland and Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. She also worked variously as a nursing instructor, nurse, director of in-service education, and raised four daughters. After Lowell retired, they moved to Northfield and soon thereafter, Eulalie started working as a pharmacy technician, continuing for ten years. At age 79, she trained as a Stephen ministry leader and continued in that capacity for about ten years.
Eulalie loved traveling, especially attending family gatherings, where her camera and Scrabble board were never far away. She was known for her to-do lists, her ability to tackle any project, her organizational skills, and the energy she devoted to every task.

A Celebration of Life memorial service for Monica Root will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 26, 2019 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in New Richland, MN, with the Rev. Scott Williams officiating. Visitation will take place Thursday evening from 4-7 p.m. at the church, as well as one hour prior to the funeral on Friday. Interment will be in St. Peter Cemetery.
Monica died on Friday, April 19, 2019 at her home in New Richland. She was 85 years old.
Monica Mazelle (Minske) Root was born on January 18, 1934 in Mapleton, MN to Alvin “Ole” and Nada (Groll) Minske. At the age of 10, the family moved to New Richland, where she graduated high school. On August 24, 1952, she was united in marriage to Orville “Buck” Root in New Richland. The couple was blessed with six children.
After starting her family, Monica was able to obtain an associate degree from the University of Minnesota. She worked at E.F. Johnson’s, the New Richland Care Center, and did farm accounting for local farmers. Monica was a member at First Congregational Church and later St. Peter Lutheran Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir, Ladies Aide, and quilting. Monica volunteered as a 4H Leader, was a member of the Saddle Club, and volunteered at the school later in life. For fun, she and Buck enjoyed going dancing on the weekend, listening to old time and country western music, and playing cards with the neighbors. Monica found peace quilting, gardening, and being on the farm. Family vacations up north and traveling were also fond memories. Above all, family was the thing Monica loved most. From helping raise some of her grandchildren, to attending as many activities of theirs that she could, Monica always tried to be there for her family.
