Friday and Saturday, December 19 and 20, the NRHEG Panthers wrestled at the Redwood Riot. The Panthers finished in second place out of a field of 31 teams.
The only team placing ahead of NRHEG was Kerkoven-Murdock-Sunberg.
The Panthers had seven place winners. These placewinners are:
Dillon Kubiatowicz 120 - Champion
Cordell Peterson 126 - Champion

Keith Maxon 182 - 6th Place
Matt Jensen 195 - 6th Place
Todd Erickson 220 - 2nd Place
Wyatt Fitterer 285 - 5th Place
“This was a good showing from our athletes,” said coach Shawn Larson. “Our wrestlers have grown accustomed to experienced competetion, and this time they were prepared to compete.
“I am very proud of a second place finish at a tournament like this, our boys deserved this finish after the work they have put in so far.”
From Coach Shawn Larson:
“Taking second place at the Redwood Riot is something that we are happy with, as our best finish at this tournament was eighth last season. It is a fairly difficult tournament to get wrestlers into the top eaight.
“The reason we did so well comes from having seven wrestlers finish in the top six. On top of the points we gained from these wrestlers advancing, we were able to get bonus points in several of our wins throughout the tournament.
“All the way up and down our line-up we were ready to compete. In the matches we lost we wrestled competitively, and in the matches we won we took charge and were in control.
“We are excited about our performance here, especially getting Dillon Kubiatowicz, Cordell Peterson, and Todd Erickson into the finals. This is the first time in the five-year existance of this tournament that we were able to have three finalists. It was also the second time we had two champions dating back to 2010 when Dustin Esplan and David Lassahn both won the tournament.
“Although we are elated with how we finished at this tournament, we cannot stop in our efforts to get better. This is a long season and we have some very tough competition ahead of us, including a tournament involving Kerkoven-Murdock-Sundburg, which is the team we were runner up to at the Redwood Riot.”

Forfeits help NRHEG wrestlers win at Medford
Written by AdministratorNRHEG wrestlers traveled to Medford on Thursday December 11. The Tigers won 6 of the 11 matches that were wrestled, but the Panthers received three forfeits, which proved to be the difference.
The final score was NRHEG 42, Medford 28.
“Medford has a good group of wrestlers, said coach Shawn Larson.
“We had good matches in almost all of the contested matches, and it would have been extremely interesting if they had a full line-up.”
“We wrestled well, though there is always room to improve.”
Key wins came from Dillon Kubiatowicz, Alex Merritt, and Jet Wayne who each earned falls for the Panthers.
Results:
The Panther Boys were undefeated at 4-0 until last Friday when they met the also-undefeated Maple River in a close match, coming out with a 66-70 loss.
“In a match-up of two pretty good teams, Maple River came out with all the intensity and got the well deserved victory,” observed Panther coach Pat Churchill. “They came out with intensity and NRHEG did not respond well.”
Maple River led by 6 poibts at halftime, and was able to extend the lead to as many as 16 in the second half.
“NRHEG tried to cut into the lead but was unable to get anything close to a run to get back in it,” said Churchill.
Grant Sonnek led the Eagles with 20 points and Jonah Breiter and Will Keller each had 17. Spencer Tollefson had 31 for the Panthers and Oakley Baker had 12.
The NRHEG Junior Varsity lost to Maple River 43-46 after two overtimes.

The Lady Panthers, eager to maintain their champion status, had some disappointments last week as they lost to Waseca in a 62-59 squeaker on Tuesday and to Tri-City United Thursday 75-59.
It wasn’t for lack of trying. The Wagner twins have been in front, scoring and contributing.

At Waseca, Maddie made 17 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals, while Marnie made 10 points, 5 rebounds, one assist and one steal. Gretchen Ramaker contributed 7 points against Waseca while Senior Anna Stork and Freshman Grace Johns made 4 and 6.
“Our inexperience showed in the second half,” said coach Onika Peterson about Waseca. “We had too many turnovers, we didn’t take care of the ball.”
The Panther wrestlers came away 2-1 at the Rochester Invitational Dual Meet Tournament Monday, Dec. 1. The team took third place.
The Panthers won against Rochester John Marshall 41-30, then lost to Stewartville 21-46, and beat Rochester Mayo 39-34.
Two Panther wrestlers were unbeaten on the day. Dillon Kubiatowicz went 2-0 with 2 falls, and Todd Erickson was 1-0 with 1 fall.
“Any time we can finish the day 2-1 with a third place finish,” said Panther coach Shawn Larson, “it will not be considered a bad day.”
Larson declared himself happy overall, but “not content.”
“We were able to win 2 duals, but in those duals and especially in our loss to Stewartville, we learned that we have weaknesses we need to work hard to correct. Our athletes are eager to get back to the practice room to get better.”
On NRHEG’s loss to Stewartville, Larson said, “They were prepared very well for a match this early in the season. This team was extremely physical and they were in good condition. They also performed well in the finals match against the defending state champion in AA, Simley-Inver Grove Heights.”
The Panthers will compete next at the Saint James Classic in Saint James on Saturday, December 6, at 9:00 am.

The NRHEG Panthers were not ranked among the top 10 Class AA boys’ basketball teams to start the 2014-15 season. Redwood Valley was.
That could change.
The Panthers hosted Redwood Valley in the season opener Saturday and prevailed 87-71 in New Richland. It was tied at 33 at halftime.
“This was an up tempo affair tonight that saw both teams trying to push the tempo,” said Panthers coach Pat Churchill “It also saw each team really challenge each other on the offensive end. The first half saw both teams get in early foul trouble with a couple guys. NRHEG pushed the lead out to six, but Redwood Valley came back and to take a four-point lead before we went into the half tied. The Second half saw NRHEG push the lead to double figures five minutes into the second half and played with the lead the rest of the way.”
For the Panthers: Spencer Tollefson 20 points, 8 rebounds; Trevor Tracy 21 points (five threes), Macoy Schwierjohann 8 points, 6 assists, 14 rebounds; Kevin Kalis 10 points, 8 rebounds; Oakley Baker 21 points; John Cole four points; Chad Agrimson four points.
“Redwood is extremely quick and Sam Pendleton is a tremendous player,” said Churchill. “I thought we did a nice job in the second half making his shots a little tougher and we did a good job on the boards. I was really proud of our team tonight. We had a bunch of guys step up and get the job done. Agrimson came in and guarded Pendleton and did a great job when Macoy and Spencer got in foul trouble. Trevor hit some big 3's but also did a nice job on their best outside shooter. Kevin Klis got in foul trouble early but did a nice job inside. It was a solid first game win over a very good team.”
The Panthers play next Thursday, Dec. 4 at home against Bethlehem Academy.
The NRHEG wrestling team opens its season Saturday, Nov. 29 at the Rochester Mayo Tournament.
The NRHEG girls’ basketball team opens Tuesday, Dec. 2 at home against Waseca.
All the Panther teams will be featured in the Winter Sports Preview set to publish in next week’s Star Eagle.
