The latest game results and prognostications for NRHEG.{jcomments on}
The weight men and the distance relay guys have led the NRHEG boys’ track and field team all spring.
So it was no surprise they did so in the Gopher Conference meet at New Richland Tuesday, May 12.
Keith Maxon won the discus and the 4x800-meter relay team took gold as the Panthers finished fourth among seven squads. USC/AC won the title with 170 points, followed by Maple River with 144, Blooming Prairie 100, NRHEG 96, Medford 68, Bethlehem Academy 64 and WEM 26.
“It was a good showing by the boys tonight,” said NRHEG coach Duey Ferber. “We were pleased with a fourth-place finish.”
When examining the Gopher Conference meet on paper, NRHEG girls’ track and field coach Duey Ferber figured his Panthers had a good chance to finish in fifth place.
His figuring was right on.
The Panther girls were fifth out of seven schools in the conference meet they hosted Tuesday, May 12 in New Richland.
“It was a good night for our girls,” said Ferber. “We ended up about where we figured we’d place.”
WEM won the championship with 154 points, with Maple River second at 105. USC/AC was next with 102.5 followed by NRHEG with 95, Medford 79.5 and Bethlehem Academy 55.
Baseball Panthers top Blooming Prairie, fall to Medford, Albert Lea
Written by Jim LutgensThe good news for the NRHEG High School baseball team is that the Panthers snapped a losing skid last week.
The bad news is it was sandwiched by a pair of lop-sided losses.
The Panthers, who finished the regular season Tuesday and open section tournament play Friday, saw their record slide to 6-11 overall and 5-7 in the Gopher Conference.
Medford 11, NRHEG 4
The Panthers kept it close for five innings against the highly regarded Tigers at Legion Field Monday, May 11 but saw the visitors blow it open in the late innings.
Medford managed three runs in the top of the first inning in drizzly conditions. The Panthers plated a run of their own in the bottom of the first.
The NRHEG High School clay target team took to the range once again last week as they continue to try and catch the conference-leading team from McGregor-Aitkin-Cromwell.
However, it was would be the MAC team that would continue to expand their lead over the second-place team from NRHEG. At the same time, the local boys did expand their own lead over the rest of the field and they now find themselves solidly in the runner up position after starting the season in fourth.
The winning ways continued for the NRHEG softball team, which completed a 4-1 week by taking down three opponents for the championship in Saturday’s Hayfield Invitational.
The Panthers ran their record to 10-3 for the spring under first-year head coach Coy Hupfeld. They’re 6-2 in the conference.
WEM 8, NRHEG 7
NRHEG got five runs in the first inning, all with two outs, but struggled to get the bats going afterward at Waterville Tuesday, May 5.
“WEM did a great job in battling back and taking the lead,” said Hupfeld.
Grace Johns did a terrific job of getting on base throughout the game. Alyssa Esplan got a key double that drove in two. Anna Lundberg also drove in two on a base hit late in the game, but WEM was able to hold on.
Esplan was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Torrie Stencel 2-for-3 with a triple. Contributing one hit each were Rachel Collins, Kaylie Camerer, Jade Peterson, Johns and Lundberg. Camerer doubled.
The NRHEG High School clay target squad improved over its first week and were rewarded by moving up in the standings from fourth to second. The team now only trails the group from McGregor-Aitkin-Cromwell High school.
The Panthers did it with very impressive performances from their top shooters and a surprise round from one of the team's rookies. Kyle Bartz (Waseca), an individual qualifier in the MSHSL State Individual Tournament last year, turned in a total 49/50 round. This brings his average over the first two weeks of the season to 24/25 which has him leading the conference and in the top 100 in the state. But, not to be outdone, newcomer Brett Kubiatowitcz (NRHEG) also turned in a 49/50 which included his first perfect round of 25 for the season.
The struggles continued for the NRHEG baseball team, which lost three games in recent play.
First-year head coach Drew Paukert’s Panthers ran their record to 5-9 overall and 4-6 in the Gopher Conference as section tournament play nears.
WEM 9, NRHEG 0
The Panthers had trouble putting anything together against Bucs pitcher Dallas McBroom, who allowed only three hits in six innings at Waterville Monday, May 4.
The home team took control early, scoring twice in the bottom of the first and never looking back. The Panthers’ hits went to Trevor Tracy, John Hubly and Grant Kyllo.
Matt Jensen was the losing pitcher. He allowed seven earned runs on eight hits, with five strikeouts and three walks.
The NRHEG track and field teams competed in the Section 2A True Team Meet Tuesday, May 5.
Both squads finished 10th among 14 schools.
Minnesota Valley Lutheran won the boys’ division with 735 points, followed by LCWM/Nicollet with 635. The Panthers had 443.
Junior John Cole captured the Panthers’ lone first, outdueling his opponent in a sprint at the finish to win the 3200 meters with a time of 10:40.26.
“Rock & roll John Cole had a fantastic meet,” said NRHEG coach Duey Ferber.
The NRHEG High School softball team continued a successful spring, posting four consecutive victories in recent play.
The Panthers hung a 32-0 embarrassment on Medford April 20, defeated Bethlehem Academy 7-5 on April 28 and swept United South Central in a doubleheader April 30, improving their record to 6-1 in the Gopher Conference and 6-2 overall.

A couple weeks ago, NRHEG boys’ track and field coach Duey Ferber hinted that we could be looking at a school record in the not too distant future.
Now we know why.
The 4x800-meter relay foursome of Tyler Schlaak, John Cole, Nate Krause and Josh Flemming accomplished the feat at the Blooming Prairie True Team meet on Tuesday, April 28, winning with a time of 8:37.33. It broke the old mark of 8:42 set in 2004 by Tim Rysavy, Matt Reiter, John Coffield and Brian Boss.

Season record slips to 5-5 for NRHEG baseball team
Written by Jim LutgensLast week was a rough one for the NRHEG High School baseball team, which dropped a 10-6 decision to Bethlehem Academy on Tuesday and lost both ends of a doubleheader to United South Central on Thursday.
Coach Drew Paukert’s Panthers saw their record slide to 4-4 in the Gopher Conference and 5-5 overall.
Bethlehem Academy 10, NRHEG 6
The Panthers hosted the rematch hoping to sweep one of the conference favorites. Instead, the visitors put six runs on the board with one out in the top of the sixth to earn a series split.
The Cardinals took a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning, sparked by a two-run home run by Christian VonRuden.
The NRHEG High School clay target team is back in action and looking to repeat its conference title from last year.
This season the team is located in Conference 4, Class 4A. Unlike most other sports, clay target teams are slated in classes and conferences based on team size. Therefore, it is very common for teams to find themselves facing different teams in different conferences or classes each year. Last year, the NRHEG team won Conference 1 of Class 3A and eventually qualified for the first ever MSHSL State Clay Target Tournament.
The NRHEG girls’ track and field team had one of its strongest showings of the season, finishing second out of eight schools in the Blooming Prairie True Team meet Tuesday, April 28.
WEM was first with 816 points. The Panthers totaled 647.5, with Maple River third at 636.5.
“It was a very nice meet for our girls pulling off a second place,” said Panthers coach Duey Ferber.
Sophomore Maddie Wagner pulled off a first place in the high jump, clearing a personal-best 5 feet, 3 inches.
“It was a great jump,” said Ferber.
Also finishing first was the Panthers’ 4x200-meter relay team of Hailey Schuller, Gretchen Ramaker, Maddie Wagner and Marnie Wagner, who won in 1:54.2.
If there’s one thing you can count on from the NRHEG High School girls’ track and field team this spring, it’s that Hailey Schuller will score a lot of points.
The junior did it again at the Maple River Invitational Thursday, April 23, placing in the top three in four events while leading the Panthers to a fourth-place finish.
“Hailey paced us again,” said coach Duey Ferber. “She always seems to be in the top three.”
Schuller won the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.98 seconds, was second in the 300 hurdles in 52.39 and third in the long jump at 13-7.5. She combined with Maddie Wagner, Gretchen Ramaker and Marnie Wagner for second in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:54.11.
