Football statistical gurus will tell you that any time you hold a team to 10 yards rushing and have a plus-three turnover ratio, you should win.
Sometimes, though, statistics can be deceiving.
The NRHEG Panthers controlled the game in many facets but fell short 21-20 in overtime in a Section 3AA quarterfinal at Maple River Tuesday, Oct. 21.
The loss ended the season for the seventh-seeded Panthers, who finished 3-6. The No. 2 seeded Eagles improved to 8-1.
Altrichter finishes atop conference
Last week was a tough and disappointing one for the NRHEG clay target squad.
Shooting in the final week of the fall season, the team saw some of their lowest scores posted. They only managed to put two scores in the top 10 for the week and only five scores above the 40 mark. At the same time, their only competition, Hermantown put together a phenomenal week scoring the most points of any team for the season. The result was a 400-point swing between the teams which put the NRHEG squad solidly in second place.
The NRHEG volleyball team lost in the opening round of postseason play, falling 3-0 to Tri-City United last Thursday.
The home team won 25-20, 25-16, 25-13.
Panther statistics: Maddie Wagner 8 kills, 11 digs; Marnie Wagner 9 kills, 11 digs; Ryann. Hagen 6 kills, 3 digs, 3 ace blocks; Alyssa Esplan 12 digs; Anna Lundberg 20 assists, 4 digs; Rachel Collins 14 assists, 5 digs.
The Panthers end the season with a record of 9-16. They will graduate seniors Hagen, Esplan, Anna Stork, Sam Pettey, Cassidy Sletten and Remi Wayne.
The NRHEG cross country team finished the 2014 season at the Section 2A meet at Blue Earth Thursday, Oct. 23.
The boys finished in a tie for 19th place with Medford, totaling 509 points. Martin County West won with 40 and Waseca was second at 51.
Things went about as expected for the boys, led by Tyler Schlaak in 66th place in 19:03.7. Following for NRHEG: Zach Mely, 92nd, 19:42.4; Josh Fleming, 109th, 20:16.1; Brenden McMann, 120th, 20:38.1; Ben Lewer, 122nd, 20:47.2; Aaron Seath, 137th, 23:42.
The team from Hermantown posted five of the top 10 scores in the conference for week four, but still could not make any ground on the NRHEG High School clay target squad.
Led by top conference shooter Frank Altrichter, NRHEG was able to put a little more distance between these two teams and put themselves in a solid lead going into the last week of competition.
Panthers open section tourney at TCU
It hasn’t been an easy fall season for coach Onika Peterson and the NRHEG volleyball team, and the struggle continued last week.
The Panthers hosted a pair of matches to finish the regular season and lost 3-0 to Kenyon-Wanamingo on Monday and 3-1 to United South Central on Tuesday.
The Panthers fell to 1-7 in the Gopher Conference, 9-16 overall.
“We have been competing the last couple games,” said Peterson. “We just haven’t been able to pull out the win.”
The NRHEG cross country teams hosted the Gopher Valley Conference Meet at New Richland’s Riverview Golf Course Tuesday, Oct. 14.

The high flying Blooming Prairie Blossoms came and left New Richland with their undefeated record and high state ranking intact.
But it wasn’t all that easy.
The NRHEG football team gave the Blossoms their closest game of the year while falling 35-20 at New Richland Wednesday, Oct. 15 in the final game of the regular season.
“What a battle,” said Panthers coach Dan Stork.
That it was.

You have to wonder what was said to the NRHEG football team at halftime last Friday. Whatever it was, it must have been good.
The Panthers trailed winless Medford 26-20 at the intermission, but blanked the Tigers in the second half while romping to a 56-26 triumph in New Richland.
According to Panthers coach Dan Stork, whose team improved to 2-3 in the conference and 3-4 overall, the first-half difference was obvious.
The NRHEG Clay Target team posted some lower-than-average scores in week three of the MSHSCTL Fall League, but managed to hold onto their lead in Conference 6 over the team from Hermantown.
The most notable drop was from Waseca's Sam Bartz who had a rough week posting a 38/50 targets broken after posting a nearly perfect 49/50 last week. It wasn't just Sam who struggled as about half of the top 50% of the team’s shooters posted lower-than-average scores.

The NRHEG volleyball team completed the toughest part of its schedule last week and, about the only thing you can say is, it could have been worse. But not much.
The Panthers, who fell 3-0 at Waterville the previous week, were blanked by the Gopher Conference’s other top teams, Blooming Prairie and Bethlehem Academy.
Coach Onika Peterson’s Panthers saw their record fall to 1-6 in the conference and 9-14 overall.

The NRHEG High School football team has experienced some frustration since week two of the 2014 season.
The Panthers unleashed some of it at Winthrop last Friday, blowing out the GFW Thunderbirds 60-14 to snap a four-game losing skid.
“Our guys played hard tonight,” said NRHEG head coach Dan Stork. “Our offensive and defensive lines controlled the game from start to finish.”
NRHEG clay target team takes over first place
Written by Jim LutgensWith six of the top 10 individual scores in the conference for week two of competition, the team from NRHEG passed up previous leader Hermantown to take over the top spot in Conference 6 of the MSHSCTL fall season.
The team was led once again by Waseca student Sam Bartz, who recorded a nearly perfect 49/50 targets broken. He was followed by NRHEG student Frank Altrichter, who broke 48/50. Bartz and Altrichter currently sit #1 and #2 in the conference for individual average. Another NRHEG student, Tyler Raimann is in the #3 spot and they are joined by six other team members all in the top 25.
