NRHEG’s Altrichter qualifies for state tournament
The NRHEG High School clay target team finished the season by traveling to the state Class 4A tournament in Alexandria June 14.
Twenty-nine of the team’s 54 athletes made the trip to compete in Novice, Junior Varsity, and Varsity level competition. Also at stake was the opportunity to return to the MSHSL State Clay Target Tournament. Last year, NRHEG was part of the inaugural year of this event.
Almost all shooters shot near or above their season averages with some turning in personal bests, but it wasn't enough to bring the team back to Prior Lake. Of the students who participated, Tyler Raimann of NRHEG turned in the top score with a 96/100. This was good enough to place Tyler in the top 10 for the varsity shooters. Tanner Alfson (Albert Lea) was in the top 10 for JV shooters with her score of 91/100. The varsity team placed in the top 10 of Class 4A teams they needed to be in the top four to advance to the MSHSL state tournament in Prior Lake.
The New Richland Jazz American Legion baseball team is off to a 1-3 start for the season.
The Jazz upended Adams 7-6 in the season opener at Legion Field, then fell 8-1 to Stewartville, 4-1 to JWP and 6-2 to Dodge Center. The team is again coached by Jake Staloch, assisted by Drew Paukert and Ed Dahle.
Jazz 7, Adams 6
John Hubly led the Jazz to victory Tuesday, June 9, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run. Sam Prigge, C.J. Schiltz, Trai Wicks and Eli Lutgens also hit safely, with Prigge and Lutgens driving in runs. Prigge drew two walks and scored twice.
Jack Schultz started on the mound for New Richland and pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and four walks while striking out eight. Prigge fanned two in relief.
The Jazz opened the scoring with two in the bottom of the first, adding one each in the second and third, two in the fourth and capping the scoring in the fifth.

An upset of arch-rival Waterville-Elysian-Morristown already made it a successful tournament run for the NRHEG High School baseball teams but, like all good things, it had to come to an end.
The Panthers’ season concluded last week in the sub-section tournament with a pair of losses, 8-2 at Waseca on Wednesday, May 27 and 4-1 the next day at Tri-City United.
The Panthers, 5-7 in conference play this year, finished 7-13 overall under first-year head coach Drew Paukert.
Waseca 8, NRHEG 2
The Bluejays took an early lead on a fielding error and it stood 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning, when they broke it open with four runs before an estimated 1,000-plus people at Tink Larson Field. The home team added two in the fifth and one in the sixth before the Panthers got on the scoreboard with two in the top of the seventh.
For the first time in 24 years, NRHEG will not have a representative at the state track and field meet.
The Panthers gave it their all but fell short in a talent-laden Section 2A meet at Mankato West Saturday, May 30.
The best finish for the Panthers was fourth, by Maddie Wagner in the high jump and Keith Maxon in the discus. Wagner cleared 5 feet. Maxon had a best toss of 137-4.
Kevin Kalis was fifth in the discus at 134-0.
Kubiatowicz is perfect; Altrichter qualifies for state
The NRHEG Clay Target team put together the strongest performance of any team in its conference this year, but it wasn't quite enough to catch the leading team from McGregor-Aitkin-Cromwell. That performance, however, did earn a number of individuals on the squad some accolades.
The team was led by freshman Brett Kubiatowicz, who recorded a perfect round (50/50). He was joined by no less than nine others who shot rounds that ranked in the top 10 for the week. According to head coach, Dan Sorum, of the 51 shooters that competed from the NRHEG squad last week, 42 scored above their personal average and of that half of them scored above a 40/50.
"This was a phenomenal effort on the team's part," said Sorum. "But, we needed MAC to stumble bit as well and they proved to be the tough team they have been all year."
The NRHEG boys’ track and field team finished fifth in the Sub-Section 5A meet May 21. Waseca won with 274.5 points. USC/AC had 150, Maple River 132, St. Clair 97, NRHEG 85.5, JWP 50, WEM 30.
“We have an extremely tough sub-section,” said coach Duey Ferber. “The boys went hard.”
The Panthers are sending six to the Section 2A meet at Mankato West Saturday, May 30.
Junior Tyler Schlaak made it in three events, taking fourth in the 800 in 2:06.44 and fourth in the triple jump at 36-7 while running a leg on the second-place 4x800 relay that included John Cole, Nate Krause and Josh Flemming. Cole was second in the 3200 in 10:36.41.
The NRHEG girls’ track and field team appears to have peaked at the right time, turning in what coach Duey Ferber called a season-best performance in the Sub-Section 5A meet Thursday, May 21.
First place belonged to Waseca with 193 points, followed by WEM with 174, Maple River 121, NRHEG 118, USC/AC 116, St. Clair 57 and JWP 33.
The Panthers are sending five girls to the Section 2A meet at Mankato West High School Saturday, May 30.
“Our girls performed the best they have all season,” said NRHEG coach Duey Ferber. “We have a very tough sub-section.”
Maddie Wagner took gold in the high jump, winning the event at an even 5 feet. She combined with her twin sister Marnie, Hailey Schuller and Gretchen Ramaker for first in the 4x200 relay in 1:53.42.
Fresh off a Gopher Conference co-championship and winners of 11 of 12, the NRHEG High School softball team had high hopes for the 2015 postseason.
They lasted about three innings.
The Panthers, seeded No. 2 in the South Sub-Section of Section 2AA, were one and done in the playoffs, upset 13-0 by Tri-City United Tuesday, May 19 at New Richland’s Legion Field.
The Panthers finished in a three-way tie for the conference crown under Coy Hupfeld in what turned out to be his first and only season as head coach; he’s accepted a job in his Iowa hometown. NRHEG finished 12-4 overall.
With two weeks left in competition ,the boys on the NRHEG High School clay target team are feeling the pressure to up their game in an effort to catch the conference leaders from McGregor-Aitkin-Cromwell.
Thanks to scores that placed the team in six of the top 10 individual scores for the week they accomplished that goal, but only by a small margin. Outscoring the MAC team by 400 points does close the gap, but with just one week left the NRHEG squad will have to do significantly better to close the 2000-point gap that still exists.
The NRHEG High School golf teams played in the recent Gopher Conference tournament, where the girls finished second and the boys fourth among five schools.
Heavily favored USC ran away with the girls’ title with 433 strokes for 18 holes. The Panthers had 463, Maple River 556. Blooming Prairie and Bethlehem Academy did not have full squads.
NRHEG scoring: Kyra Possin 112, Jessica Nafe 113, Jill Jongbloedt 118, Bayli Possin 120, Grace Logan 129, Tali Wayne 146.
The outlook was downright bleak for the NRHEG High School baseball team entering tournament play.
After a strong start, the Panthers had struggled much of the season, compiling a 6-11 record and drawing the No. 7 seed in the south half of Section 2AA, earning the right to play at Gopher Conference champion and No. 2 seeded WEM. Add to that the fact NRHEG had not won a playoff game since this year’s seniors were in sixth grade.
Easy win for the Bucs, right? Wrong.
The Panthers pulled off the upset, hammering the home team 10-4 Friday, May 22 at Waterville.
The Panthers advanced to the double-elimination portion of the tournament and play Tuesday, May 26 at Waseca. Win or lose, the Panthers play Friday, May 28 at the site of the higher seeded team.
When they started the season winning one of three games, you had to wonder what kind of year it would be for first-year head coach Coy Hupfeld and the NRHEG High School softball team.
Since then there’s been little doubt.
The Panthers ended the regular season last week with a pair of victories, extending their winning streak to six games. They’re 12-3 overall, 6-1 in the Gopher Conference, having won 11 of 12 since starting the season 1-2. They opened sub-section play Tuesday. The Panthers finished in a three-way tie for the conference championship.
NRHEG 15, Medford 5 (Five innings)
The Panthers hosted the Tigers Monday, May 11 and came away with an easy five-inning victory.
