For the second week in a row, the Panthers were victims of a one-point defeat resulting from turnovers, lack of possession, and another failed late game two-point attempt.
The NRHEG football team lost its homecoming game in heartbreaking fashion Saturday night, Oct. 2, falling to Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 22-21.
“As a team we did a lot of good things,” NRHEG Head Coach Marc Kruegar said. “For the second week in a row we had a difficult one point loss.”
The Panthers got on the board first, scoring via safety in the first quarter. On the ensuing possession, the Junior running back Andrew Phillips broke away for a 30-yard touchdown run for his first of two scores on the day.
Midway through the second quarter, momentum began to shift. GFW quarterback Brody Hentges connected with Nick TenEyck for a 31-yard score. A failed point after attempt kept the Panthers ahead until the last play of the half. An 11-yard touchdown pass from Hentges to Ashton Buboltz followed by a successful two-point try put the Thunderbirds up 14-8.

Last week the Waseca Lady Jays soccer team traveled to Fairmont and Worthington and came away from both conference contests with wins, improving their overall record to 10-4 and 9-1 in the conference. With the wins, the Jays remain squarely in first place in the Big South Conference.
The contest in Fairmont on Monday, Sept. 27 was a hard fought struggle between both teams with Waseca scoring first on a goal from junior forward Sam Azure.
From there it was a back and forth battle as Fairmont and Waseca exchanged goals, leading to a halftime score of 2-1 in favor of the Lady Jays.
The second half saw Fairmont scoring in the first ten minutes to tie the game. Waseca answered just a few minutes later with a score of their own from senior forward Madaline Bulfer, her second of the game, giving the Lady Jays the lead for good.

The Panthers lost the turnover and time of possession battles Friday night, ultimately leading to a 14-13 loss at the hands of St. Clair Loyola.
Traveling to play the Spartans, the Panthers came within a point after attempt at winning, but failed to convert a fourth quarter two-point try.
“Turnovers were the name of the game,” NRHEG Head coach Marc Kruger said. “We moved the ball very well on offense, but had two fumbles, three interceptions, and a blocked punt. We just couldn't overcome that.”
After a scoreless first quarter the Panthers got on the board first midway through the second quarter on an 18-yard pass from Senior Porter Peterson to fellow senior Jack Olson.
The Spartans answered with a little over a minute left in the first half, punching it in on the ground from three yards out. With a successful two point conversion, the halftime score was 8-7 in favor of the Spartans.
