The NRHEG Cross Country teams participated in their first home track meet of the season.

“Tonight was another beautiful night for a cross country meet for the NRHEG team,” NRHEG Head Coach Miles Otstot said. “Our boys had another solid outing, led by Devon Nelton and our girls also had a fantastic night, with Quinn VanMaldeghem placing 2nd place.”

The boys team finished sixth with a score of 151. Tri City United won it with 27, followed by JWP/WEM, 54; Loyola, 68; Medford 124; Maple River 147. Pacellie finished seventh with 159, followed by Blooming Prairie with 159.

“The rest of the team was tightly behind Nelton,” Coach Otstot said. “We love to see our boys running this tightly together and hope that they will continue to do that the rest of the season.”

Individually for the Panther boys: Nelton, 19:50, 22nd place; Conner Nelson, 20:44, 30th place; Gavin Sletten, 20:59, 33rd place; Eric Arvis, 21:08, 35th place; Sam Christensen, 21:16, 38th place.

The girls, unfortunately, did not field a full team.

“VanMaldeghem did well,” Coach Otstot said. “Torri Vaale was just slightly outkicked to take 6th place and Annabelle Petsinger and Lexi McGannon both had strong kicks to finish off the race.”

Individually for the lady runners: Quinn VanMaldeghem, 21:41, 2nd place; Torri Vaale, 22:23, 6th place; Annabelle Petsinger, 26:20, 27th place; Lexi McGannon, 28:23, 38th place.

Up next the Panthers compete at Waseca on Oct. 7 and at Oak View Oct. 12. The Panthers host the conference meet Oct. 19.

The NRHEG Volleyball team continued its successful season against USC prior to running into a wall at Faribault Bethlehem Academy Thursday.

The Panther’s defeated USC three games to none. Game scores were 25-14, 25-12 and 25-18. The tempo was fast and so were the games.

“Our passing tonight was huge,” NRHEG Head Coach Onika Peterson said. “With our passing being on target, our setter did not have to move all over the court to set up our hitters. It allowed us to run a quicker tempo offense keeping the other team out of system defensively.”

With the win, the Panthers improved to 7-3.

Individually for the Panthers: Erin Jacobson 6 kills, 6 digs, 1 ace block; Sophie Stork 10 kills, 1 dig; Bree Ihrke  5 kills, 1 ace serve, 1 dig, 2 ace blocks; Hallie Schultz  30 assists, 2 kills, 1 dig, 3 ace serves, 1 ace block; Sarah George 6 kills, 2 ace blocks; Rhys Martin 3 kills, 4 ace serves, 2 ace blocks; Sidney Schultz 7 digs.

The Panthers traveled to play at Faribault, Thursday, Sept. 23, losing three games to none. Game scores were 25-15, 25-18, and 25-10.

Porter Peterson did his best to lead the Panther football team against Mayer Lutheran, ultimately in a losing effort. Much like his brother Palmer Peterson did six years ago, the last time the Panthers defeated the Crusaders, Porter Peterson played an “amazing game,” passing for more than 100 yards in the 33-12 loss.

Things got out of hand quickly as the Crusaders jumped on the Panthers early and often in the first half, scoring on short run plays twice in the first quarter. The Crusaders scored two more touchdowns before the half was over. One on a short run, midway through the second quarter, and another on a pass play just before time expired in the half, bringing the score to 26-0.

It wasn’t until midway through the third quarter when the Panther offense would come alive. Following another touchdown by the Crusaders, Peterson connected with senior receiver Jack Olson for an eight-yard touchdown. The extra point attempt was no good. More than halfway through the fourth quarter, Peterson completed a long touchdown pass to fellow senior receiver Bo Budach for 33-yards.
