The NRHEG girls cross country team did everything they could to win its conference track meet last week, ultimately losing via tie breaker to WEM/JWP. The boys finished third.
“While disappointed we did not win the conference, I am very proud of how all our runners did today,” NRHEG head coach Miles Otstot said. “They fought through a lot of adversity this season. Despite having only 11 varsity athletes between both boys and girls, they put together a strong showing at conference today.”
On the girls side, JWP/WEM won it with a score of 50, followed by NRHEG with 50. The tiebreaker was based on the team’s sixth runner and because NRHEG did not have a 6th varsity runner, they could not win the tiebreaker. Finishing in third was Blooming Prairie, 56, followed by Maple River, 89 and Medford, 90.
This was the first meet back for 8th grader Quinn VanMaldeghem after missing the last two. She came up just short of a conference championship, finishing second. The Panther next leading runner, as she has been all year, was Torri Vaale who finished right behind VanMaldeghem, taking third.

Clay Target Team Coach
Week three of the State High School Clay Target league saw the Panthers of NRHEG keep their top spot in Conference 16 even though second place Andover did close the gap a little. The team was led by rounds of 25 straight by Grady Murphy and Ned Bell. For Bell, it was his career first 25 straight as he led all local shooters with 48 out of 50 targets broken. Murphy turned in a 47 total score, as did Alden Dobberstein. The team also maintained strong representation in the conference Top 25 Averages. On the male side Clay Stenzel leads all shooters with an average of 23.83. For the ladies Eva Wayne remains in first, tied with one of the shooters from Andover. Altogether there are five female shooters and five male shooters from the Panther squad sitting in the top 25. Additionally, Clay Stenzel and Alex Dobberstein each rank in the Top 50 shooters for the state. The team has 2 weeks of competition left to solidify their position in the conference.

Journey Uptadel
The high school Lady Jays season comes to an end in heartbreaking fashion during the quarterfinals of the section tournament, falling in overtime to Kasson Mantorville, 3-2, Tuesday, Oct. 12.
The Jays fell behind early 1-0 and carried the deficit into the second half. A resilient Bluejay squad wasn’t done without a fit. The Jays clawed back, taking a 2-1 lead with less than three minutes to play, with both goals coming on assists from Thyme Lang and Maddie Bulfer.
Kasson rallied and tied the score, sending the game to a 10 minute overtime match, where the first score wins. With less than a minute left in the period, Kasson sent the Jays home with a walkoff winner.
The loss ends an incredible run by the Jays, who appeared, at the beginning of the season, to be in what Coach Jenaro Delgado called a rebuilding year.
