Last week the Waseca Lady Jays soccer team traveled to Fairmont and Worthington and came away from both conference contests with wins, improving their overall record to 10-4 and 9-1 in the conference. With the wins, the Jays remain squarely in first place in the Big South Conference.

The contest in Fairmont on Monday, Sept. 27 was a hard fought struggle between both teams with Waseca scoring first on a goal from junior forward Sam Azure.

From there it was a back and forth battle as Fairmont and Waseca exchanged goals, leading to a halftime score of 2-1 in favor of the Lady Jays.

The second half saw Fairmont scoring in the first ten minutes to tie the game. Waseca answered just a few minutes later with a score of their own from senior forward Madaline Bulfer, her second of the game, giving the Lady Jays the lead for good.

Freshman forward Gabby Lopez put the exclamation point on a very exciting match with an insurance goal for the final score of the game. Lopez took a nicely placed lead pass from Azure to foot the ball into the corner of the goal with just under 4 minutes left in the contest.

On Thursday, the Lady Jays traveled to Worthington to take home a weather shortened 1-0 victory.  The lone score came within the first 5 minutes of the game on an Azure goal, assisted by junior Thyme Lang.  With lightning and storms closing in on the area, the game was called at halftime.

There are two games remaining on the regular season schedule for the Jays: Tuesday, Oct. 5 in Mankato against the Loyola Crusaders and at home Thursday, Oct. 7 against St. Peter. The Thursday matchup will begin early, at 4:30 p.m. due to Waseca Homecoming activities.
