The NRHEG Lady Panther basketball team had a tough week, dropping a pair of Gopher Conference match-ups in New Richland.
On Dec. 10, the WEM Buccaneers came to town. The Panthers had difficulty contending with the length of the visitors as the Bucs seemed to get rebounds and open shots with ease most of the night. The Panthers cut the lead to two points right before halftime, but the Bucs hurled a halfcourt shot that swished through at the buzzer to put them up 29-24.
The second half saw the home team come within 36-34 before the Bucs rattled off a 24-10 run to retake control, finishing the game with a 67-47 victory.
"We ran out of steam in the second half," said Coach Onika Peterson. "Our team fought the whole game."
Sophie Stork posted a double-double with 18 points and 15 boards to go along with an assist. Sidney Schultz had 16 points, 2 rebounds, and 4 assists. Hallie Schultz chipped in 6 points and 3 rebounds while Kendall Johnson had 4 points, 3 boards, and an assist. Cassidy Martin finished the scoring with 3 points. Raquel Fischer snared 7 rebounds and dished out 2 assists while Teagan Sutter had 3 boards and Sarah Johns 2 rebounds.

Coach Isaiah Lundberg knew the NRHEG boys’ basketball team could take its lumps early in the season.
A couple of them came last week.
The Panthers fell to 0-5 with a pair of loses, 94-43 at WEM Dec. 10 and 75-26 at Blooming Prairie Dec. 13.
WEM 94, NRHEG 43
The Panthers jumped on top 4-0, but it was all downhill from there.
WEM’s press forced many turnovers, resulting in a 49-16 halftime score.
“When we did beat their press, we got good shots, but didn’t make many,” said NRHEG coach Isaiah Lundberg. “The game just kept snowballing in their favor and before we knew it we were down by 25 points.”
The game was not without its lessons, however.
“I told the guys that this is what their pressure does to you,” said Lundberg. “It will speed you up and make you play faster than you want to. I give WEM a lot of credit. They’re a good team with good players who play well together.”

All season long, the game plan for the JWP Bulldogs has been to run the football.
So that’s what they did in the Section 2AA playoff quarterfinal against the NRHEG Panthers Tuesday, Oct. 22 at Janesville.
The Bulldogs ran on all but six offensive plays and handed the Panthers an 8-0 setback. It ended NRHEG’s season at 3-6 overall while JWP improved to 5-4.
“It was an end to the season we didn’t expect,” said NRHEG coach Marc Kruger. “It’s not the way we thought it would be.”
The game was fairly even from a yardage perspective, with JWP outgaining the Panthers 260-225, but the Bulldogs ground out 19 first downs to the Panthers’ five while holding onto the ball for more than 29 minutes. JWP outrushed NRHEG 234-49.
“It was a very even game, each team playing really well,” said Kruger.
But the Panthers couldn’t capitalize on three red zone appearances and the Bulldogs overcame six turnovers.
