The NRHEG High School wrestling team wrestled in Wells last week for a quadrangular match with USC, St. Clair – Mankato Loyola, and Norwood-Young America. The Panthers won all three matches, defeating NYA 51-6, St. Clair-ML 33-18, and USC 33-30.

“We have kept the momentum that we have built, and again wrestled fairly well,” said NRHEG coach Shawn Larson. “We had a great night. I do not remember the last time that we were able to have three wins in one night.”

Posting victories for NRHEG against USC were: Nikolas Petsinger at 120, Andrew Reich at 138, Thor Routh at 152 and 160 by forfeit, Ralph Roesler (170). Conner Okland was 2-0 with two falls at 182.

Against NYA, posting victories for NRHEG were: Annabelle Petsinger at 106, Parker Bunn at 113, Nikolas Petsinger at 120, Clay Stenzel at 132, Andrew Reich at 138, Cameron Cantu at 152, George Roesler at 160, Ralph Roesler at 160 and 170, Max Seltun at 195, Makota Misgen at 285.

Posting victories for NRHEG against St. Clair-Mankato Loyola were: Nikolas Petsinger at 126, Ethan Thompson at 132, Andrew Reich at 138, Agro Gushwa at 145, George Roesler at 152, Ralph Roesler at 170, Conner Oakland at 182.

“USC was a great dual because the individual match-ups in this dual made for a very interesting match that could be won by either team,” remarked Larson. “I feel that both sides wrestled well and everything was close in the team score, and it made for a fun atmosphere in Wells.”

The Panthers’ next competition will be the Section 2A Tournament on Thursday, Feb. 13.

For the second game in a row on the road, the NRHEG Girls' Basketball team faced a state-ranked foe, this time as part of a boy-girl doubleheader in Waseca on Feb. 4. It was also Coaches Vs. Cancer night, and thousands of dollars were raised between the two communities in the fight against cancer.

NRHEG came out battling, and the scrappy Panthers stuck with the Bluejays in a defensive affair, trailing 22-16 at the half. However, in the second half, Waseca's strong interior game and ability to get to more loose balls, paired with NRHEG's turnovers and struggle getting good shots ultimately led to defeat for the visitors 46-30. "We faced the best post player we have seen all year with Waseca's Breck. We continue to get better, but tonight their physicality and size hurt us," said coach Onika Peterson.

Sidney Schultz scored 12 points to lead for the Panthers along with 9 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists. Sophie Stork was next with 6 points, 4 boards, 2 steals, and an assist. Erin Jacobson tallied 5 points and 5 rebounds while Sarah Johns had 3 points and 3 boards. Teagan Sutter and Faith Nielsen each had 2 points; Sutter added 3 rebounds and 2 steals while Nielsen also snared a board. Hallie Schultz cleaned the board with 7 rebounds and Raquel Fischer also had 1 board.

The NRHEG boy’s basketball team saw its record fall to 3-19, (1-10 in the conference), with a pair of recent losses, 79-74 to USC Feb. 7 and 78-51 to Fairmont Feb. 3.

“Early in the game we went back and forth until USC got hot from 3 point range,” said NRHEG coach Isaiah Lundberg. “USC made seven 3-pointers in the 1st half compared to our two.”

The Panthers fell behind the Rebels 40-28.

“In the second half we looked like a totally different offensive team,” remarked Lundberg. “We got the ball up the floor quicker and got some layups and hit 6 3-pointers, which is big for us and hasn’t been there this year. We did a good job in the half court moving the ball and attacking their zones. We got it to three, 77-74 with a chance and missed a shot and had to foul them and they made free throws to seal it.  It was the best effort we have played with all year.”

The leading scorer for NRHEG was Porter Peterson with 18. Lonnie Wilson scored 16, Kordell Schlaak 14, Ashton Johnson 12, and Tyrone Wilson eight. Jack Olson, Daxter Lee and Blake Ihrke all scored two points each.

AJ Kloos led the Rebels with 36 points. Ethan Dallman scored 18.

The Panthers fell behind Fairmont 36-21 at halftime.
