BROOKLYN CENTER— Using information released Oct. 8 by the Minnesota Department of Education, the Minnesota State High School League updated member schools with information for spectators of indoor activities to align with the MDE guidance. Under the MDE revised guidance, two fans per participant will be allowed to attend indoor events. Prior to the updated guidance, no spectators were allowed.
The updated guidance is effective immediately, but member schools will determine implementation plans for their events. Member schools do have the option of implementing stricter guidelines.
MDE continues to stress that sporting events are high risk for COVID-19 transmission and are further high risk for activities that promote airborne particles of COVID-19.
The newly-released guidelines apply to all indoor sports, concerts, plays, competitions, performances, and any other similar events that have spectators. The guidance is specific to events that take place in a school building or facility where instruction takes place. Events held at these facilities must abide by the following parameters:
• Each team/group at an indoor event is allowed up to a total allocation of two spectators per participant. Consistent with other Stay Safe guidance, spectators must be separated by at least six feet between households/spectator groups and event spaces cannot exceed 25 percent of total capacity.

While some sports have to wait until spring, things are looking up for the NRHEG High School cross country teams this fall.
“I think we have a strong team that has the chance to be competitive in our conference,” said third-year head coach Miles Otstot. “In addition to the returning runners that are returning, we have picked up a few athletes from volleyball and football, since they do not have seasons. I am hoping that they can help contribute to a strong team this year and are excited for this chance to be four-sport athletes.”
Returning on the boys’ side are seniors Daniel Nydegger, Gavin Anderson and Caden Riewer, junior Tyler Malkowsky and sophomore Conner Nelson. Nydegger was named most valuable runner and received first team all-conference honors. He finished second in the conference last year and will be looking for a conference championship this fall. Malakowsky was second team all-conference and most improved, Riewer honorable mention.
For the girls, junior Torri Vaale, sophomore Olivia Kofstad and freshman Annabelle Petsinger are back. Valle was most improved and made second team all-conference. Petsinger was also second team all-conference. The big loss on the girls’ squad is Mecaela Vaale, the fastest runner last year and also second team all-conference.
