The NRHEG wrestling team hosted United South Central Friday, Feb. 5 and won their first Gopher Conference dual meet of the season, 42-38.

Afterward, coach Shawn Larson was thankful after so many close losses for his previously-winless squad.

“It is great to get a win this time,” said Larson. “Before tonight, we have had five duals that we had a chance to win and found a way to bring ourselves down. Tonight, we found a way to get past our opponent.”

The Panthers fell behind 24-6 before Carter Flatness ended USC’s run with a fall at 138 pounds.

Then the Rebels won the next two matches to go up 34-12.

The Panthers won five of the next six bouts to take the win, with a fall by George Roesler in 21 seconds at 182. USC forfeited five bouts.

Lady panthers defeat Blooming Prairie and Maple River at home

Hard work and commitment pays off. That has been the story of the NRHEG volleyball team, which defeated Blooming Prairie 3-2 November 2. Games one, three and five went to the Panthers. Scores were: 25-17, 25-16, 27-25, 25-18, and 15-9.

“The girls showed a lot of heart and fight tonight in our game,” said NRHEG head coach Onika Peterson. “We have made a ton of progress from that night to now.”

The win against the Blossoms was important for multiple reasons. “Blooming was the first game of the season and we lost 3-0, the second set wasn’t close,” said coach Peterson. “ I'm very proud of the girls and the strides they have made.”

The 2020 Fall League is over as far as scoring and, even though the shooters from NRHEG will not know their final conference standing until December, the team did announce their award winners for the season.  The team had 11 letter winners from the 35 student athletes that competed this fall.  To letter an athlete has to average a 20 out of 25 and score in a minimum of 4 of the 5 weeks of competition.
