The NRHEG wrestling team hosted United South Central Friday, Feb. 5 and won their first Gopher Conference dual meet of the season, 42-38.

Afterward, coach Shawn Larson was thankful after so many close losses for his previously-winless squad.

“It is great to get a win this time,” said Larson. “Before tonight, we have had five duals that we had a chance to win and found a way to bring ourselves down. Tonight, we found a way to get past our opponent.”

The Panthers fell behind 24-6 before Carter Flatness ended USC’s run with a fall at 138 pounds.

Then the Rebels won the next two matches to go up 34-12.

The Panthers won five of the next six bouts to take the win, with a fall by George Roesler in 21 seconds at 182. USC forfeited five bouts.

“Hopefully, we will continue to improve and maybe win against other teams that we have lost to,” said Larson. “Tonight we had big wins from 7th-grader Carter Flatland at 138, who has really been stepping up lately, and freshman George Roesler at 182. Both of these wrestlers earned huge falls in our win tonight.”

The Panthers, 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the conference, traveled Monday to Mapleton for a triangular with Maple River and Kenyon-Wanamingo. They also wrestled Tuesday in Lake Crystal in a triangular with LCWM and Sibley East and are scheduled to wrestle in a triangular at Madelia Tuesday, Feb. 16.
