Don't let the final score of 67-50 fool you, the NRHEG girls basketball team did not simply walk through Medford Tuesday night in the opening round of the Subsection 2 playoffs.

A sloppy game, with more than 30 fouls between the two teams, saw momentum swing to the Panthers early after they opened up an early 12-0 lead.

On one particular sequence, Faith Nielsen was fouled on three consecutive possessions resulting in free throws each time.

The Panthers led 30-19 after a controversial foul call resulted in 3 free throws attempts from the Tiger’s with 0:00s showing on the clock.

In the second half, the Tigers clawed their way back to within five points.

However, a Sophie Stork three-pointer ended the Tiger run four minutes into the second half. The rest of the way the Panthers outscored the Tigers by a margin of roughly 3-2.

“Tonight was a great game,” NRHEG head coach Onika Peterson said. “We had an awesome home court advantage with such a fun student section. Medford is a good team with a couple of heavy hitters.”

As for the performance of her players, Peterson said she was happy with the overall communication and defense. “We’re still looking to work the ball on offense and have a little more patience.”

In her final home game of her career, Senior Sophie Stork led the Panthers in scoring with 19 points, followed by Faith Nielsen and Erin Jacobson each with 14.

Also scoring for the Panthers were: Preslie Nielsen, 9; Sidney Schultz 8, Hallie Schultz 2, and Quinn VanMaldeghem 1.

The Panthers play Waterville Thursday night at Mankato East Highschool at approximately 7:45 p.m.

The NRHEG Volleyball team continued their best season in ten years, defeating St. Clair three games to zero in its first home playoff match since 2018.
The last time the Panthers finished with a winning regular season record was in 2011 when they went 24-6 and came within “a whisker” of a sub section championship, narrowly losing to LeSueur-Henderson. And the last time the Panthers played for a sub section championship was in 2015 when they were swept by Kenyon-Wanamingo.
This Panther team hopes to do what those teams could not as they prepare for a Thursday night bout for the sub section championship in New Prague against high seed WEM.
The spikers hosted St. Clair Thursday, Oct. 28 and took all three games handily, by scores of: 25-18, 25-20 and 25-7.
“The girls competed for every single point,” NRHEG head coach Onika Peterson said. “It was great to get a win at playoff time.”
The Panthers handily took all three games, by scores of: 25-18, 25-20 and 25-7.
“Our defense moved well and had some huge saves for us,” coach Peterson explained. “They kept our quick tempo offense moving all night. Offensively we had a lot of kids getting some big swings, which was great to see.”
Individually for the Panthers: Faith Nielsen, 1 dig, 2 assists; Erin Jacobson, 10 kills, 1 dig, 1 ace serve; Sophie Stork, 15 kills, 6 digs, 1 ace block, 1 ace serve; Hallie Schultz, 29 assists, 2 digs, 1 ace block; Bree Ihrke 5 kills; Sarah George, 4 kills, 4 ace blocks; Rhys Martin, 1 kill, 1 assist, 2 ace blocks, 2 ace serves, Bailey Ihrke, 1 dig; Sidney Schultz, 15 digs, 2 assists, 1 ace serve.
The Panthers continued their run Monday night, traveling to Mankato East and defeating Maple River in the second round of section playoffs three games to one.
The Panthers dropped the first set 25-22, but as they have all season, didn’t give up, winning the final three games by scores of 25-18, 25-13, 25-23.
“I continue to be impressed with this group of girls,” coach Peterson said. “They fought for every single point tonight. There were a couple of times they could have stayed down, but they picked each other up, completed, and finished strong. It was great to see.”

After a couple of rainouts, the New Richland Jazz baseball team finished up their exhibition season at home on July 8 against Hayfield. After the Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead, the Jazz fought back. Daxter Lee scored on an Alex Dobberstein single and Ulrich Woollard walked with the bases loaded to score George Roesler.

However, the 5th inning proved to be New Richland's undoing. Hayfield scored six runs in the top half of the frame, most of them unearned. The Jazz scored another run in the bottom of the 5th when Ben Schoenrock hustled home on a wild pitch, but another Hayfield run in the 6th inning led to a final score of 10-3.

Addison Deyle, Dobberstein, Roesler, and Schoenrock all took turns on the mound for the evening. While the team didn't come out on top in any of their summer games, they took advantage of the games they had to get more at-bats, fielding opportunities, and chances to pitch in order to get better for the next school season.

The following all played for the Jazz this summer: Jackson Chrz, Addison Deyle, Aidan Deyle, Alden Dobberstein, Alex Dobberstein, Anton Domeier, Wyatt Groskreutz, Daxter Lee, Sam Olson, George Roesler, Ben Schoenrock, Clay Stenzel, Ethan Thompson, and Ulrich Woollard. The team was managed by Leon Schoenrock, who was assisted by Luke Dobberstein and Mark Domeier.
