Funeral services for Ronald Christensen of New Richland, MN, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 5, 2011 at the Community Lutheran Church in Geneva, MN. Pastor Carrie McElfresh will officiate. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m. at the Bonnerup Funeral Service in Ellendale, MN, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Geneva Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Ellendale Veterans Group.
Ronald died Monday evening surrounded by his family, August 1, 2011 at the St Cloud Hospital in St Cloud, MN. He was 78 years of age. He was born April 7, 1933 in Albert Lea, MN the son of Hans and Carol Christensen.
Ronald graduated from Ellendale-Geneva High School in 1951 and the University of Minnesota. He was united in marriage to Joanne Vangen on June 13, 1954 at the First Lutheran Church in Ellendale, MN. He worked in Albert Lea at Queens/Almco in engineering for six years.
Donald J. Hartwig, 89, of Owatonna, died Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at his home.
Donald John Hartwig was born August 27, 1921 in Owatonna, Minnesota the son of John and Rose (Schwartz) Hartwig. Don graduated from Owatonna High School class of 1939. He then worked with his father in the Recorders Office and later entered the United States Army on October 12, 1942 serving during WWII. He received his honorable discharge in February 1946 and was awarded the American Theatre Service medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Service medal. He returned to the recorders office. He was united in marriage to Marion Dunker on March 25, 1947 at First St. John's Church in Owatonna. In 1958, Don was elected as Register of Deeds and assumed the office in 1959 serving as register of deeds and register of titles until being promoted to Steele County Recorder until his retirement in 1987.
Sean Ernest Stenzel, age 27, of Matawan, MN, died Sunday, July 31, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN as the result of a car accident. Funeral mass will be held Thursday, August 4, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Wells, MN. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 3, 2011 from 4-8 p.m. at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Father Eugene Stenzel will officiate and burial will take place in St. Casimir Cemetery in Wells, MN. Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells is assisting the family with arrangements.
Sean was born March 13, 1984, in Winona, MN to DeAnne Stier and Todd Sievers. On April 12, 1984, he was adopted to Richard and Mary Stenzel of New Richland, MN. Sean attended school at Alden-Conger Public School and graduated in 2002 from New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva High School in New Richland, MN. Sean worked as a carpenter and was very skilled in ceramic and floor tiling. He had a quick wit and a sense of humor. Sean had a very special relationship with all of his grandparents. He will always be remembered by his beautiful smile.
Sean will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. He is survived by his daughter, Liliana Fay Stenzel; his parents, Richard and Mary Stenzel of New Richland; his birth mother, DeAnne Sievers Reed and step-father, David Reed; grandmothers, Evangeline Stenzel and Joy Stier; brother Jesse (KC) Sievers; sisters, Amy (Travis) Kostner, Ella Reed, and Lydia Reed; nephew, Tanner Sievers, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Sean was preceded in death by his birth father, Todd Sievers; brother, Nathan Stier; grandparents, Loretta and Ernest Johnson, Dominic Stenzel, Bill Stier, and Mr. and Mrs. Curty Sievers; and many aunts, ncles and cousins.
Memorial services for Luke Alan Minter of New Richland, MN, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 1, 2011 at the Church of All Saints Catholic Church. Father Swamy will officiate. Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Friedrich Funeral Home in New Richland, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Richland, MN.
Luke died Thursday, July 28, 2011 at his home in New Richland. He was 46 years of age.
Luke was born February 10, 1965 in Rochester, MN, the son of Roland and Beverly (Fuller) Minter. He graduated from high school in Zumbrota, MN, and attended college for a short time.
On November 12, 1994 he was united in marriage to Susan Wilson in New Richland. Luke had been employed by Williams Pipeline, Twin City Pipeline, Waseca Feed Mill, Corcoran Company, past owner of New Richland Railing and most recently at Lakeside Foods in Owatonna, MN.
Luke had been a member of the Army National Guard, enjoyed fishing whenever he could and spending time with his pet dogs. Luke was a welder by trade and had fixed something for almost everyone in the community.
Luke is survived by his wife Susan of New Richland, MN, mother Beverly Minter of Hudson Bay, FL, children; Jason Minter of Wanamingo, MN, Alyssa Minter of Wanamingo, MN, Ashley (Jesus) Chesley of Dodge Center, MN, Kevin Minter of New Richland, MN, Prycilla (Tim) O’Malley of Mankato, MN, Amanda (Corey) Brinkman of Brooklyn Park, MN, and Joe McGuire of New Richland, MN. There are four grandchildren, one sister Vicky (Rick) Barnes of Hudson Bay, FL, one brother Mark Minter of Zumbrota, MN, nieces and nephews.
Luke was preceded in death by his grandparents, father Roland and brother Robby.
Helen E. (Olson) Swenson, 88, of New Richland died Friday, July 29, 2011 at the New Richland Care Center.
Helen Eleanor Olson was born October 7, 1922 in Owatonna, the daughter of Hans C. and Anna (Johnson) Olson. She was raised on the family farm south of Hope, MN and attended District 86 country school and graduated from Ellendale High School in 1942. She was united in marriage to Raymond O. Swenson on December 14, 1946 in Minneapolis at the First Covenant Church parsonage.
Following their marriage, Helen and Raymond started farming in the Vista community. Helen was employed by Birds Eye in Waseca for 32 years. She enjoyed reading, canning and playing cards. She was a member of the Vista Evangelical Covenant Church. Later, Helen and Raymond moved from the farm into the city of New Richland and wintered in Mesa, Arizona. Their marriage lasted 56 years.
Helen is survived by three sisters; Myrtle Bentley, Angeline (Gary) Parsons and Marion (Joe) McDilda, all of Owatonna; brothers in law; Russell Swenson of New Richland, Marvin (Winnie) Swenson of Waseca; Rolland (Carol) Swenson of Otisco; sisters in law; Esther Dietrich of Waseca, and Kay Swenson; and many nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, her parents, and a sister, Violet Christensen.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2011 at the Vista Evangelical Covenant Church in New Richland with Pastor Steven Thompson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Church Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Vista Evangelical Covenant Church
Curtis Robert Schember, 83, of Geneva, died Saturday, July 23, 2011 at his home. A Memorial Service and Picnic is being held in celebration of his life at the Geneva Community Building between 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27.
Curt was born February 20, 1928 to George and Mary Schember in New Richland. He was the fifth and youngest child. He was baptized, confirmed and attended school in New Richland.
Curt was a hard worker, had many interests and was employed at a number of different jobs; the poultry house, the bakery, the “hemp plant”, Kalke’s tile plant, the canning company, and many local farmers along with assisting his dad on the snow plow. Curt also worked for a lumber yard along with a trucking firm in St. Paul, driving all over the Twin Cities area without a license as he was only 14 years old. He later ran a filling station in New Richland on the corner where Wagner’s store is now, what he remembers was “Full Service Gas-6 gallons for a dollar.”
The funeral service for Rodney Lee Arnold of New Richland, Minnesota was held 2 p.m. Monday, July 25, 2011, at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Richland, MN. Pastor Paul Andree officiated. Interment was in St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery. Rodney died Friday, July 22, 2011, at his home. He was 62 years old.
Rodney was born May 20, 1949 in Albert Lea, Minnesota to Merton and Ethel (Johnston) Arnold. He was a lifetime New Richland area resident. Rodney married Lois Aldrich on December 27, 1969 in New Richland. Rodney was a self employed Dry Wall installer. He also was a mechanic and worked on cars, tractors and on all types of motors. During the winter Rodney enjoyed plowing snow for his nephew Chris Besser Snow Removal. He also enjoyed restoring classic cars. Every morning he would meet for coffee with his friends at Dad’s Good Stuff in New Richland. During the fall he would help area farmers. Rodney enjoyed going deer hunting with his sons and especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren. His special companion was his dog Dakota.
Rodney is survived by his wife Lois Arnold of New Richland, Minnesota; sons Jim Arnold of Grand Meadow, MN, John (Ginger) Arnold of West Concord, MN and Rob Arnold and special friend Jessica of Geneva, MN; daughter Tracie Rosacker of New Richland; grandchildren Levi, Dylan, Tiffany, Taylor, Tori, Amber, Mariah, Alexis, Braxton, Nathan, Jessica and Eli; mother Ethel Arnold of New Richland; sister Linda Besser of New Richland; and many nieces and nephews.
Rodney is preceded in death by his father Merton Arnold and brother Gary Arnold.
Funeral services for Palma A. Richardson of New Richland, MN, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at the LeSueur River Lutheran Church, rural New Richland, MN. Pastor Paul Meierding will officiate. Visitation will be held from noon until 2 p.m. the day of the service at the church. Interment will be in the Hartland Cemetery, Hartland, MN.
Palma died early Thursday morning, July 21, 2011 at the Albert Lea Good Samaritan Center. She was 92 years of age.
Palma was born October 21, 1918 in Hartland, MN, the daughter of Anton and Julia (Nelson) Olson. She graduated from Freeborn High School, Freeborn, MN, and on November 25, 1942 was united in marriage to Albert Richardson.
Judith Rae “Judy” Burtness, age 64 of Brownsdale, MN died at Fieldcrest Care Center in Hayfield Wednesday evening, July 13, 2011. She was born June 7, 1947 to Vernon I. and Vernelle (Oftedahl) Moe in Mankato, MN. After graduating from New Richland High School in 1965, Judy studied business at Mankato State University for a short time. She married Neil Burtness on October 19, 1966 at LeSueur River Lutheran Church near New Richland. They made their home in Brownsdale. Judy worked in the business office at Austin Public Schools for over 25 years. She enjoyed shopping, collecting giraffes and spending time at the cabin in Faribault in the summer.
Survivors include husband Neil Warren Burtness of Brownsdale; two daughters, Jennifer (Todd) Hauschildt of Burnsville; grand children Elsa, Greta, Owen, Jill (Kurt) Kraling of Rochester; great grandchildren Hunter and Hannah; her father, Vernon Moe of Ellendale, and a sister, Jan (Rick) Leth of Grand Island, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her mother Vernelle Moe; sister Karen Peterson and an infant son.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 18, 2011 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin, with Pastor Glenn Monson officiating. There was a gathering of family and friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, is in charge of arrangements. Pauline Esther (Wiggins) Calhoun Anderson, age 87 of Waseca, went to be with her Lord on Monday, July 11, 2011 at Lake Shore Inn in Waseca.
She was born to Rev. Roy and Isabelle (Shipley) Wiggins on August 20, 1923 in Holden, South Dakota. On June 7, 1943 she married Floyd “Cal” Calhoun. Floyd passed away on March 17, 1977. Pauline lived in New Richland until October 20, 1990 when she married Archie Anderson of Waseca.
Pauline worked at Brown Printing Co. in Waseca for many years. She was a member of Vista Covenant Church where she was very active teaching Sunday School, Deacon board, VBS, women’s ministry, and she especially loved singing in the choir. Her family was very important to her and she looked forward to every and all family gatherings. She also spent her time reading and was always ready to go for a ride.
Ruth Ann Marie Frisk, age 100, passed away on Friday, July 8, 2011 at the Pleasant Manor Nursing Home in Faribault.
Born in Otisco Township, Waseca County on June 6, 1911, Ruth was the youngest of five children born to August and Hannah (Lundquist) Frisk. She attended rural school district #48 in Waseca County. Ruth worked on her family’s farm until she was 20 years old. She then did housework for the Deichen family for several years and worked at E.F. Johnson Company in Waseca for four years. She then moved to Minneapolis where she went to work for Munsingwear, Woolworth’s, and was a supervisor and cashier at the food counter at the Forum Café. Finally, she worked with Pilgrim Laundry Service in Minneapolis for over 20 years before retiring. Throughout her retirement, she volunteered at Mount Sinai Hospital and at the Senior Center where she did blood pressure checks. She greatly enjoyed traveling and had seen much of North America, and enjoyed playing the mandolin and the piano.
She is survived by four generations of nieces, nephews and their respective spouses. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Gertrude and Esther; and two brothers, Harold and Lawrence.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Vista Evangelical Covenant Church in Waseca County, with Rev. Steve Thompson officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour before the service at the church. Interment will follow at Vista Covenant Cemetery. Kinder-Dennis Home for Funerals in Waseca is handling the arrangements.
Irene Ameila Kaplan, 90, formerly of Blooming Prairie, died Saturday, July 2, 2011 at McKenna Crossing in Prior Lake, MN. Previous to moving to McKenna Crossing in June 2010, she was a resident of Traditions I in Owatonna.
Irene was born in Summit Township on March 31, 1921, the youngest daughter of Frank and Amelia (Styndl) Maixner. She graduated from River Point School and attended Owatonna High School. Following school she worked at several jobs including Caspers Grocery Store and Huber Glove Company.
On October 4, 1949, Irene was united in marriage to Milton A. Kaplan at Associated Church in Owatonna. The couple farmed northeast of Owatonna prior to moving to their farm northwest of Blooming Prairie in 1956. Irene and Milt retired from farming in 1994 and the couple later moved to Blooming Prairie in 2000.

Faith died Sunday evening at St Johns Lutheran Home in Albert Lea, MN, she was 82 years of age.
Faith was born October 25, 1928 in Waseca, MN, the daughter of Fred and Etta (Davis) Born. She attended country school in Waseca. On November 12, 1949 she was united in marriage to George M. Swenson in Waseca, MN.
