The Geneva Cancer Auction has built quite a reputation over the past 30 years. The $1 million mark for money raised in Geneva was reached in 2010 and now, in 2014, another new mark was set.
The 2014 auction brought this year’s total to $100,000. Yes, $100,000!
Whitey and LaJune Hagen again made their yearly trip to the Eagles Cancer Telethon in Rochester on Sunday, January 19, to make the presentation on behalf of the many great people from the Geneva area who help raise money for cancer research.

Geneva doesn't have a very big population, according to the map or the record books. But in terms of the friends who come to be part of a great cause, it’s a very big place.
Continuing a tradition
The Geneva Bar and Grill was filled with supporters on Jan. 10 and 11 for the first weekend of the 30th Annual Geneva Cancer Auction. It may have been cold outside, but much warmth was generated inside.
It is without a doubt the event of the year.
Whitey Hagen welcomed everyone to Geneva, and told the gathering that some people have participated all 30 years.

Wagner again shatters state records as Panthers take title
THANKS TO CARLIE, WE WERE THE CHAMPIONS — As NRHEG fans celebrate in the background, Carlie Wagner goes in for a layup after stealing the ball late during the Panthers’ state championship victory over Braham last March. Last year was one filled with big changes for our small communities of New Richland, Hartland, Ellendale and Geneva: a state championship, new administration at the school, a new area priest, and national attention for some of our own hometown heroes. It’s difficult to narrow it down to just 10 of the most important events, but the number one slot should be more than obvious.
Once again, Carlie Wagner and the Lady Panthers basketball team steal the spotlight, bringing home NRHEG’s first state championship. Coming off a 32-1 season and a third-place finish, the Panthers made their second visit to state in a row, their third appearance ever (the first being in 2004). Despite the loss of key player Jade Schultz four minutes into the semifinal game, the girls fought their way to victory, defeating Pelican Rapids, Minneapolis Washburn and finally undefeated Braham in what has been called one of the most exciting championship games in state tournament history.

The gym was again packed and there were at least four television stations, several newspapers and two radio stations covering the game.
