Wagner, Panthers break records in state opener
NRHEG's Carlie Wagner goes to the hoop for two of her single-game state tournament record 53 points during the Panthers' 100-68 victory over Pequot Lakes in the opening round of the Minnesota State Girls' Basketball Tournament Wednesday at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis. Wagner broke her own state record set last year. The Panthers' 100 points are also a tournament record — breaking the old mark set in 1984 — and the two teams' 168 points were a record. The Panthers advanced to face Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted in the semifinals Friday at 6 p.m. at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. If the Panthers win Friday, they'll play for the state championship Saturday at 2 p.m. at Williams Arena. If they lose Friday, they play for third place Saturday at noon at Concordia University in St. Paul. (Star Eagle photo by Jim Lutgens)

MANKATO – Many people felt the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva girls’ basketball team needed a close game to toughen the Panthers up. Those people got their wish in the South Sub-Section 2AA championship game at MSU-Mankato Monday.
Gopher Conference foe Waterville-Elysian-Morristown slowed the pace and forced the Panthers to break away from a halftime deadlock to post a 45-34 victory.
Coach Gabe Hauer’s Buccaneers saw their season end at 18-10. The Bucs lost two regular season meetings to NRHEG 75-39 and 83-48.

Making a Difference:
NR’s lucky to have Norm, Sharon Eckart

To some, they’re parents. To others, they’re grandparents. And to our community, they are pillars, giving an abundance of time, effort, and care, never asking for a thing in return.
Norm and Sharon Eckart are natives of New Richland; both grew up here and graduated from New Richland-Hartland High School. They married young, and Norm, a Vietnam veteran, was drafted into the military, where he served three years shortly after their marriage. But nothing could hinder their relationship.
“We were high school sweethearts,” Sharon commented humorously, although the endearing look exchanged between the two said it all.
“We’ve had arguments, just like anyone,” Norm said, “but we always sit and discuss it.”
