Baker scores 40, top 2,000 for his career

There was a lot of orange in the crowd at Concordia University in St. Paul Friday afternoon.

It didn’t faze the NRHEG Panthers. Especially Oakley Baker.

Baker scored 40 points and surpassed the 2,000-point barrier for his career as the Panthers outlasted Lake City 77-66 for the Class AA boys’ basketball state consolation championship.

Baker, who had seven three-pointers and was 13-for-13 from the free-throw line, did not miss a free throw in three state tournament games.

Tyler Raimann also reached double figures with 15 points, as did Benji Lundberg with 11. Brady Agrimson scored six, Jason Jongbloedt three, Chad Agrimson two. Sam Prigge also started but did not score. Jack Schultz played but did not score.

Does anyone think the NRHEG Panthers got a bit short-changed with their first-round state tournament draws?

They’re not alone.

Last week, the unseeded girls faced No.1 seed and eventual state champion Roseau before winning the consolation title.

On Wednesday, No. 2 seed St. Cloud Cathedral needed overtime to knock off unseeded NRHEG 70-59 in the boys’ Class AA quarterfinals at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.

A three-point basket by Benji Lundberg sent the game to overtime, but by then it was almost too late. Leading scorer Oakley Baker had fouled out in regulation — which ended in a 54-54 tie — and No. 2 scorer Tyler Raimann fouled out early in overtime.

Chad Agrimson got the NRHEG boys off and running in Thursday night’s Class AA state basketball consolation semifinal at Concordia of St. Paul.

Oakley Baker finished it off.

Baker, a 6-5 senior, totaled a game-high 22 points as NRHEG blasted Breckenridge 65-47.

NRHEG (29-3) will face Lake City (24-7), which defeated Jackson County Central 62-41 in the other consolation semifinal, at 2 p.m. Friday at Concordia for the consolation championship.

On Thursday, it was almost all Panthers. After Agrimson hit his opening basket, they went on to lead 18-4 behind hoops by Benji Lundberg, Tyler Raimann, Baker, Jason Jongbloedt and Jack Schultz. It was 30-19 at halftime.

Author Michael Schumacher will speak about his book The Mighty Fitz: The Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald at New Richland Public Library (119 S Broadway, New Richland, MN) on Thursday, March 30 at 6 p.m. Schumacher will provide a fitting tribute to one of the largest ships to have sailed the Great Lakes and its fate as the most legendary shipwreck on America’s inland waters. Peter Klug will sing Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” at the event. The author will be signing books at the event.
