Council begins to replace Wayne Billing

A couple big announcements were made during the New Richland City Council’s first meeting of the month on Monday, July 13. First, the council accepted the resignations of two New Richland Police Officers: Officer Sawyer, whose last shift was July 5, and twelve-year full-time officer Ryan Gehrke, with the latter to remain with the department in a part-time capacity.

Chief of Police Tony Martens read Officer Gehrke’s letter of resignation while presenting the police report, which included a request that the council freeze Gehrke’s full-time pay as he continues as a part-time officer. The council approved the letter and request, along with a request from Martens to post for an open full-time position with the department.

The police report also stated that the NRPD responded to 135 calls in June, bringing the total calls for 2020 to 713. The old squad car, which was originally sold to a buyer that did not pay within the required time period, was re-listed and sold for $3,025. Officer Lee has completed his FTO, allowing him to take shifts on his own, and Officers Gehrke and Huebbe have completed required EVOC training.

Finally, after much consideration, Martens has decided to cancel New Richland’s annual Night to Unite due to the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. A plan is being worked on with the Commercial Club to hold an alternative, socially distanced event to take the place of the usual celebration. The police report was approved.

The 2020 New Richland Spring Garage Sales have been postponed. Fall City Wide Garage Sales are scheduled for Sept. 19, 2020.

If you are a New Richland area resident and would like to hold a sale, call City Hall at 507-465-3514. To be placed on the map, a form must be completed by Sept. 14, 2020 and e-mailed or delivered to City Hall.

Maps will be placed at Casey's General Store, Wagner Foods and City Hall.

The City of New Richland has decided not to hold Swimming Lessons for the 2020 summer season due to the restrictions in place for the state of Minnesota right now. They will miss seeing all the children this summer and plan to hold lessons at the lake again starting next summer!

Please call City Hall with any questions, 507-465-3514.

The Communion of Saints Catholic Community of New Richland, Janesville and Waldorf has issued the following statement:

“The target date for reopening the parishes in our cluster is the weekend of July 4-5, 2020. We hope to have supplies by this date and it is also when Fr. Brian Mulligan will be joining our parishes. While other parishes may open before us, we truly feel it is in our best interest to reopen when we are fully ready and all safety protocols in place. We are in this together.”

The cancellation of the in-school year for 2020 does not mean the cancellation of awards.

This year’s band award winners have been announced. A total of three awards were awarded to two individuals, Jayna Domeier and Maggie Maloney.

The winner of the Louis Armstrong Award for Jazz Band is Jayna Domeier.

According to Miles Ostot, the Band teacher at NRHEG high school, “Jayna is also a phenomenal musician who is eager to learn and engage more in music. In Jazz Band she was always one of the first people to volunteer for improv solos and that helped her to improve on the trumpet and as a musician.”

The award for Concert Band, the John Phillip Sousa award, was awarded to Maggie Maloney.

Otstot commented on the award winner, “Maggie is a phenomenal musician whose leadership and playing ability has benefitted the band immensely. It has been fun for me to watch her challenge herself, struggle, persevere and succeed in music. This perseverance and leading by example, along with a dedication to excellence, is why Maggie is being honored with the John Phillip Sousa Award.”
