Cancellations lead to one-day event

The briefer version of Ellendale Days on Sat. Jul. 18 proved that, if the threat of a virus won't keep Minnesotans indoors, the heat will. Unfortunately, due to 90+ degree predictions, most of the events were canceled.

Those who did attend, however, could still enjoy the rummage sale, organized by First Lutheran Church. Aisles of tables piled high with everything from clothing to Christmas ornaments filled the main hall of the Community Building, where volunteers, such as Becky Lassahn, also served sloppy joes, bags of chips, bars, and cool beverages from the fridge to those who braved the heat to get there. First Lutheran Church holds a yearly rummage sale as a fundraiser for their youth group.

Jackie Kottner, who, along with Lois Gonalin, runs the farmers market in Ellendale every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, usually on Main St., sold baked goods just inside the door of the Community Building.

People also stood outside, enjoying the fare from the corn dog and shaved ice stands on the street outside of the Community Building.

Beside the Fire Hall, a noble display of fire trucks, bearing the label 'Ellendale Fire Department,' stood as an impressive reminder of what a committed team of firefighters the community has, and proving that, no matter how hot it gets, the Ellendale Fire Department will be there.

Waseca-Le Sueur Regional Library System Covid-19 Updates:

Elysian Area Library, Janesville Public Library, Le Center Public Library, Le Sueur Public Library, Montgomery Public Library, New Richland Public Library, Waseca Public Library, and Waterville Public Library will open for 15-minute browsing appointments and 30-minute computer appointments on a limited basis starting Monday, July 20th. Community members should call their local library to schedule their appointment. Masks will be required while in the library buildings. The meeting room, bathrooms, water fountains, newspaper browsing, and seating (other than at the computers) will not be available at this time in an abundance of caution for our communities and staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Curbside delivery will continue to be available to those who wish to use it.

Waldorf Public Library will continue to be closed due to their building capacity, but will continue to offer curbside and home delivery,

To continue to serve patrons during this time, the library system added a significant amount of new school-age content to the online collection of e-books and e-audiobooks available at OverDrive and Libby (the mobile app). Library patrons can also use their library cards to access Creativebug craft and art classes.

The library system is holding online events. Registration is required for these events through the library system’s website at wasecalesueurlibraries.com/summer.

NRHEG School Board

“We still don’t know anything,” said NRHEG Supt. Dale Carlson at Monday’s school board meeting, concerning the nature of the 2020-2021 school year.

“We expect three plans to be put forth,” he said. “An open model, a closed model, and  a hybrid model.”

The Governor is expected to issue a new set of guidelines next week, and only then will the Minnesota School Board Aassociation follow through with their recommendations.

Local districts may decide to be more restrictive, but not less.

The plans will be discussed at the August board meeting.

Referendum

The board voted to approve the resolution authorizing a referendum to increase district revenue to be put on the ballot this November.

The referendum calls for an increasse in general revenue by $560 per pupil for 10 years.
