Outdoor ceremony set for May 31 at 8 p.m.
NRHEG High School Principal Dave Bunn and Senior Class Advisor Deb Bently have been putting considerable effort into adapting plans for this year's graduation ceremony, so that they meet the requirements of social distancing.
Many options have been considered, and many difficult choices have had to be made. They understand that many people are affected by these plans, and that the graduation ceremony is a milestone event, both for our seniors and their families.
Please be aware, as you read the document below, that governmental health agencies have the power to prohibit us from having any ceremony at all. For that reason, some uncomfortable and even rigid restrictions have been forced upon us.
We thank all the community members and other contributors who have offered their support and assistance as the graduation ceremony is planned.
Preliminary plans for the NRHEG class of 2020 graduation ceremony
Please be assured we are working hard to create the memorable experience our seniors deserve.

NRHEG spring coaches remark on impact of lost season
By ELI LUTGENS

Senior year is special. A player’s final season, for any sport, activity, or school event is special. This year’s seniors will not get their final song, their final at-bats, or of their other last insert-name-here moments. That said, the Star Eagle reached out to the coaches of NRHEG spring sports to get their perspective on the lost season.
The feeling from the coaches was a sense of understanding. “It’s disappointing to say the least, but it would have been a much greater disappointment if someone had gotten sick,” remarked clay target team head coach Dan Sorum. “I had hoped for some time that we could have rescued the season. The league (MN High School Clay Target League) even put together guidelines for a modified season that we could be using. But in the end I didn't think it was proper to ignore the MSHSL ruling.”
Sorum was not the only understanding coach. “I feel bad for our seniors,” said NRHEG track coach Duey Ferber. “I understand the whole concept of the stay-at-home order.”
The impact on the players is reflected and felt abundantly by the coaching staff as well. According to Ferber, “I'm doing O.K. I miss the kids and the relationships you build when you compete together.”

New Richland City Council
By JESSICA LUTGENS
Staff Writer
The New Richland City Council started off its second meeting of the month on Monday, April 27 with the approval of the agenda, consent agenda items, and Resolution 20-07 extending the state of local emergency to the next meeting. Council member Jason Casey abstained from the vote on Resolution 20-07. All members were present, and the meeting was again conducted via an online app allowing attendees to connect on their computer, mobile, or call-in.
The PeopleService report was reviewed by the council in the absence of Brad Field and approved. Ryan Nissen then presented the maintenance report, stating that the search for a seasonal maintenance worker/lawn mower has had no luck so far. A request to advertise for the position online was approved.
“We’ll be in dire need soon for someone to start mowing for us,” Nissen said.
A purchase request for another locator due to an increased number of weekly utility locations at a cost of $745 was approved, followed by some discussion regarding St. Olaf Lake and the upcoming swimming season. It was agreed that the dock and swimming ropes will be installed, but the raft will not. The fate of this year’s swimming lessons will be decided at an upcoming meeting.
Before the report was approved, chip seal work at a cost of $22,941.49 was approved.

It was a somber day for NRHEG.
Typically, graduation is a group event where every senior is together one final time. The class of 2020 will not get the typical experience. They will not experience a senior prom, Baccalaurette, or even, their final day of class. What they get is bittersweet.
With 17 days left until the official conclusion of the 2019-20 school year, seniors were delivered yard signs and good wishes Monday night across the school district, complete with caravans led by fire trucks.
It's hard to imagine what seniors are going through, the thoughts going through their minds. Some people say graduation is for the parents more than the seniors. That may be the case. As school buses made their rounds Monday night, one comment stuck out, "This is kind of fun," said one volunteer firefighter from Geneva.
Caravans quickly formed as the faculty made their rounds of deliveries. The stops were short and the conversations brief as cars started lining up behind the school bus, fire truck and fire truck vehicle. As the sirens and horns honked, Deb Bentley, Brook Olson and Robin Eder all ran out to greet the high school senior at each stop.

The Kindergarten Time Capsule for the NRHEG High School class of 2020 has been posted to YouTube. Thank you to our kindergarten teachers for making this treasured footage back in 2007-08, and keeping it for this important time.
The link to the video is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6itqT63Wxs&t=206s. It can also be found by searching NRHEG Class of 2020 Kindergarten Time Capsule.
The video is a bit spotty in terms of its quality. If you are disturbed by the "skipping" phenomenon as you watch, don't log off right away — some parts of the video are better than others; move to another part and see what exciting element of kindergarten life is on display there.
Please know that the mechanical difficulties are the result of circumstances outside anyone's control. The reason you did not receive this notification months ago is because technicians have been doing what they could to improve the video's quality: the cogs inside the "old-fashioned" VHS tape were not turning properly, and both the sound and the video were affected.
Whatever disappointment you might feel as you watch, please know that it was essentially unwatchable the first time it was transferred.
