The New Richland City Council held its second meeting of April on Monday, the 28th. All members were present except Amy Ihrke. The agenda and consent agenda were both approved, with one addition for a request added.
A guest was in attendance to request the purchase and installation of new “Panther Nation” signs to take the place of the current “Welcome to New Richland” signs outside of town. There will be two signs per entrance. The signs will also recognize the Panther girls’ basketball state championships for 2013 and 2014, and the state champion Panther cheerleading squad. The project will be completed by students at NRHEG High School. The council approved the request.

Spice, bath salts, Scooby Snax
Forum on emerging drug trends May 13 Ellendale’s UM Church
Synthetic drugs, including K2, Spice, bath salts, and Scooby Snax, are an emerging issue in our communities. These drugs threaten the health and safety of our youth.
The problem
Drug abuse is one of the most hidden and pervasive risks to adolescents today. Young people are dying from drug overdoses. At the same time, many parents have no idea about today's variety of drugs, their accessibility, their effects, and how to talk about it with their children.

Softball Panthers win two of four
Two more one-run losses leave NRHEG girls with 4-3 record
If it weren’t for one-run losses, the NRHEG softball team would be undefeated.
As it is, the Panthers stand 4-3, their latest one-run loss coming in the opening round of Saturday’s Panther Invitational at Legion Field, 12-11 in nine innings to Belle Plaine.
“This was a rollercoaster of a game,” said coach Wendy Schultz. “We dug ourselves into a hole and fought our way back.”
Trailing by seven runs entering the seventh, the Panthers plated seven runs by stringing together six consecutive hits.
Close games slip away for NRHEG nine
It doesn’t look like the NRHEG Panthers will play much baseball this week, and there wasn’t much played last week.
The Panthers got two games in, falling 14-6 to Medford on Monday and 6-1 to Randolph Tuesday. Both were played at Legion Field.
On Monday the Panthers flirted with their first win of the year, leading 6-4 after four innings, but Medford knotted it in the fifth and broke it open with eight runs in the sixth.
Trevor Tracy was 3-for-3 for the Panthers, scoring once and driving two runs. Grand Kyllo was 2-for-3 and scored a run. Dillon Parpart collected two RBIs and scored a run on one hit. Matt Jensen and Dillon Kubiatowicz also hit safely.
Schiltz sizzles again with meet record
NRHEG track and field boys third among eight schools at Maple River
According to NRHEG boys’ track and field coach Duey Ferber, there hasn’t been much competition for senior distance runner T.J. Schiltz this season. Until last Tuesday, anyway.
So how did he respond?
With two first places and, for good measure, a meet record at the Maple River Invitational.
Schiltz won the 1600 meters in 4:38.9, breaking the old meet record, and clocked 10:08.94 for first in the 3200.
“T.J. is really bringing his times down,” said Ferber. “It was nice to have some competition in his races.”
Sans Wagner, girls 7th at MR, 3rd at BEA
Did the NRHEG girls’ track and field team miss Carlie Wagner last week?
Do we need to ask?
With Wagner sidelined due to hamstring tightness, the Panthers competed in a pair of meets, taking seventh among eight schools at Maple River Tuesday and third out of five at Blue Earth Area Friday.
Hailey Schuller was the leader at Maple River, taking third in the 100 and 300 hurdles. She joined Abby Wacholz, Marnie Wagner and Taylar Tieskotter for fourth in the 4x100 relay.
Clay target team off to promising start
With the wind blowing in what seemed every direction, the NRHEG clay target team got off to a rough but promising start last week.
It was rough as most of the top shooters did not post their typical scores, yet promising as the total team effort was still enough to place the team solidly in second place in their conference. Conferences in the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League (MSHSCTL) are determined by team size. NRHEG is in Class AAA Conference 1 with teams from Edina, Mahtomedi, St. Thomas Academy, Zimmerman, East Grand Forks, and New York Mills.
