New Richland City Council members Christine Gislason and Anthony Martens were absent as Mayor Tom McShane brought the August 22 meeting to order Mnday evening. The night’s agenda and consent agenda items were all approved. Notable on the consent agenda was granting of a temporary liquor license to All Saint’s Church for their Fall Festival in September, as well as a pay request from Civil Ag Group in the amount of $136,025 for work on the Dogwood Avenue sewer upgrade.

Pam and Larry Goehring were in attendance representing the “Save the Legion Building” committee.

“Our goal is to purchase, renovate, and turn the building over to the city as a community center,” said Larry Goehring. “We would like to raise $200,000 by December 1st. Plans are for relocating the food shelf and the historical society to the building. The back room will be rented out for weddings and other community events. There will be a board to oversee operations.”

“The building has been inspected,” said Pam Goehring. “There are a few issues. Landscaping has been done on the north side.

The Goehrings announced an Ice Cream Social will be held at City Hall on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 4-8 p.m.

“It will be an informational event for people to ask questions about the building,” said Larry Goehring.

Brad Field from PeopleService reported normal operations at the Waste Water Treatment Facility.

“It will be a couple more weeks until work begins on the new lift station on 3rd St.” said Field. “All of the pipe is in on the Dogwood project.”

Field recommended televising and cleaning some sewer lines and lift stations at a cost of $2,916.

“Do we have money in the budget?” asked Mayor McShane.

Upon confirmation from City Clerk Wayne Billing, the council approved Field’s request.

Maintenance supervisor Ryan Nissen requested the purchase of a 2,000-watt portable generator at a price of $499 plus tax. The request was approved along with $1,000 for paint at the skating rink.

Jeff Reese and Mark Domeier from the Quad Cities Baseball Association discussed concerns about Legion Field. Reese announced several small electrical issues which are in need of repair due to the September 2010 flood.

Reese and Domeier said between the school, town teams and summer recreation there were over 100 games played on the baseball and softball fields this season.

“The lights are finally paid for,” said Reese. “Our top priorities right now are replacing the fence on the baseball field and the backstops on the softball field. Cost estimates are $15-20,000.”

The council passed Resolution 11-22 which accepts the Public Funding Authority loan of $2,450,000 for the upgrade to the treatment plant.

The council reviewed several options for the septic system at St. Olaf Lake. The present system was installed in 1977 and appears to be functioning properly. The council decided to take no action until more information is obtained.

A special council meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. The purpose is to work on the city’s 2012 budget.

Beth Hoffman was approved to attend EMS school at a cost of $1,276.32. Joyce Wobbrock was also approved to re-join the ambulance service.

The next regular meeting of the New Richland City Council will be held on Monday, Sept. 12 at 6:30.
