The New Richland City Council met for its first meeting of the summer on Monday evening, June 13 with all members present except council member Anthony Martens, who was up north fishing.

All consent agenda items were approved. There were no public hearings scheduled nor requests from residents to be heard.

The council adopted Resolution 11-6, which accepts a $20,000 donation from the Fire Relief Association towards the purchase of the new brush truck.

Police Chief Scott Eads noted 47 calls for service and an additonal 43 contacts for the month of May. During the NRHEG prom, Eads reported the department had an extra car on patrol.

“We just wanted to maintain a presence,” said Eads.

The police department is participating in the “I Got Caught” program this summer which rewards young people with free Dairy Queen ice cream cones when playing safely.

“When we observe kids wearing a helmet while biking, skateboarding, or roller blading, looking both ways before crossing the street, or using proper hand signals when biking, they get a ‘citation,’ said Eads. “We hope to issue all of the citations before the end of summer.”

New Richland Care Center Administrator Mikenzi Hebel noted the mini-audit for the months of October-April had been completed. Hebel requested approval for $1,200 in repairs to the kitchen refrigerator and $4,875 for repairs to the kitchen’s air conditioning system. Both requests were approved. Hebel announced some good news she had received.

“We now have flood insurance,” said Hebel. “The cost is $2,547 annually. Also, the center will be receiving $17,500 from the estate of Adlyn Nelson and our census is now at 50.”

Ambulance Chief Jenny Johnson reported 121 runs so far this year. Johnson noted a request for a “ride along” from a member of the community. After a short discussion, the council denied the request. Johnson also mentioned the department would be receiving a donation from the Nelson estate.

Fire Chief Jeremy Parpart had applications from prospective firefighters Alex Moen and Joe Isder. The council approved both applications. The council also decided to put the old brush truck up for sealed bids.

The council discussed the rain garden and other improvements to City Park. Planting day is set for Saturday, June 25. All residents who want to help are cordially invited.

Council members were in favor of an agreement with the Quad Cities Baseball Association on the use of Legion Field. The council also approved installation of a new water heater and the purchase of a used Gator for the field. It was decided the city would be responsible for weed control and fertilizer application as required.

The last item of business was discussion on employee evaluations. City Clerk Wayne Billing noted the last evaluations were dated 2008. Interviews will be conducted in the future with panels of two or three individuals and not necessarily the entire council.

The next meeting of the New Richland City Council will be held on Monday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m.
