Honeywell requests money

At last Monday’s regular school board meeting, NRHEG Superintendent Kevin Wellen reported a communication from the Honeywell/ESG Project Supervisor at Honeywell, Inc., citing numerous change-orders as the reason for requesting the district to pay Honeywell an additional sum of approximately $16,000.

Only last month, the board had finally okayed the $4,400 completion payment to Honeywell for the project, which had been withheld by the district pending resolution of a dispute over a major error in the specifications. An air exchanger included in the project plans was omitted from the specs, and much subsequent work was needed, which took nearly two additional years to be both finished and written off.

Wellen, summarizing the letter for the amused board members, expressed some surprise that there even was a supervisor for ESG at Honeywell responsible for the project, which was acquired by Honeywell in its purchase of Energy Services Group several years ago.

No action was taken.

Last year the board declined an offer from Honeywell of an $18,000 annual service agreement on the contract work, believing it to be superfluous.

Wellen also reported that the district was talking with representatives of the Waseca, JWP and Waterville districts to get together on milk and bread vendors, hoping to get a group deal and lock in reliable service for all the districts.

A year with no new contracts

The Master Agreement with Education Minnesota NRHEG for the 2011-2013 school years, already ratified by EM, was approved. This will provide an approximate total two percent per year increase in salary and benefits for the two years.

Tenured and non-tenured individual teacher agreements were also approved.

“That’s the last contract we needed to approving this year,” said Wellen of the Master Agreement. All contracts for 2011-12 are now current.

“This (upcoming year) will be my first year, either as a teacher, administrator, or superintendent, where there’ll be a whole year with no negotiations needed,” Wellen reflected.

Resignations

NRHEG bus driver Kermit Kalke was approved for retirement, after serving the district for 32 years.

The board also accepted a resignation from Julie Svoboda.

Cooperative Soccer

The Cooperative Sponsorship agreement with Waseca for Soccer was dissolved, so that the new agreement including the JWP district could be approved.

Donations

Donations approved were $280 from Southern Gateway MN Deer Hunters, for Target Team Shooting Vests; $1,000 anonymous donation for Flood Relief; and $600 from the David Swenson Memorial fun for Shop Class.

Other

The board reviewed the district’s current policy regarding Fund Balances, containing a suggested revision allowing the Finance Committee to be authorized to assign fund balances. No action was taken at this time.
