The NRHEG Spring Band Concert will be a little jazzier than usual this year. It will also be a day earlier than planned.

The annual spring spectacular for band members grade 5-12 is set for Monday, March 11 — rescheduled from March 12 — at 7:30 p.m. in the NRHEG High School gymnasium in New Richland, and it includes some special attractions.

“It’s a bit of a unique concert,” said NRHEG Band Director Tim Siewert. “We’re going to have a couple guest artists play with us.”

The Bethany Lutheran College Jazz Band will perform a set and be joined by the NRHEG Jazz Band for another set.

“One of my goals after the last school year was to bring in a guest artist,” said Siewert. “I thought it would be great exposure for the kids to see a college act, and to play with them is a great opportunity.”

In addition, 2000 NRHEG graduate and current professional musician Adrian Barnett will present his award-winning saxophone act, solo, with the Bethany band and with the NRHEG band.

It’s a natural fit, according to Siewert.

“Once I decided to bring in the Bethany Jazz Band, I thought, ‘It’s kind of turning into a jazz night,’” he said. “I just thought it was fitting to have Adrian come as well.”

Barnett, who has been featured on the pages of the Star Eagle for his musical prowess, performs throughout the Midwest, according to Siewert, splitting his living time between New Richland, Mankato and “wherever he can get a playing job.”

Recently, Barnett won the Downbeat Award, from Downbeat Magazine, which Siewert said is a national award and a very big deal in the jazz world.

“He’s one of the very best saxophonists I’ve ever heard, and I’ve heard hundreds of saxophonists and musicians,” said Siewert.

And let’s not forget the NRHEG bands.

“The fifth-grade, sixth-grade, middle school, high school — the whole instrument program will be featured that night,” said Siewert.

The public is invited and admission is free.
