The Ellendale Elementary students answered the call and helped the Mission Impossible Team. The students in grades K-6 raised nearly 1500 pounds of food and $154.50. The 4th grade captured the prize of raising the most pounds of food with 289 lbs. The 3rd grade won the prize for collecting the most needed items and the most cash donations.
“Prize winners will be treated to pizza, a movie and root beer floats sponsored by the Elementary Student Council,” said Brooke Krohn, NRHEG Social Worker. “The food and money were split between the Ellendale and New Richland Area Food Shelves.”
Due in part to the nation’s economy, food shelves across the country have seen an increase of visitors which translates to a higher demand for food items and other basic necessities. As schools dismiss for the summer, the burden on local food shelves becomes even greater as families who normally rely on school lunch programs for their kids, will undoubtedly be flocking to area food shelves.
In the Gopher State, Minnesota FoodShare directs the March Campaign for the 300 food shelves across the state. By recruiting thousands of congregations, companies, schools and other civic groups, Minnesota FoodShare is an advocate for hungry Minnesota families. It acts as a clearing house for cash donations and distributes funds to participating food shelves.
“I am very, very confident we will reach our statewide goal this year,” said Sue Kainz, March Campaign Coordinator for Minnesota FoodShare. “With the generosity of Minnesotans, we should easily reach a combined $12 million and pounds of food.”
“The Ellendale Area Food Shelf would like to thank the communities for their support,” said Mikesell. “Without them, we couldn’t do what we do.”
“We want to thank all of the donors for their efforts as well,” said Goehring. “The team’s name in now officially changed to the ‘Mission Possible Team.’”
