It is hard to believe in this country there are those who go hungry, but there are. No one should have to go to bed at night with a stomach that aches from lack of food.

In lieu of this, the local congregations of Zion Lutheran Church, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, First Lutheran Church of Owatonna and Pontoppidan Lutheran Church are again hosting the annual Harvest Run For Hunger to help raise money to support the local food shelves.

The 3nd Annual Harvest Run For Hunger will be held Saturday, September 15 and includes a 7k Run, 4k Walk and a Youth Run for children 10 years and younger, which is 400 meters in length.

Everyone is invited to come out to the country to enjoy the beautiful scenery for a run or walk. Last year’s participants, sponsors and volunteers made a difference in the lives of many in Steele and Waseca County. It is hoped that this year’s event will be bigger and better.

Participants in 2011 came from a wide area and a total of 51 registered for the 4k walk, 51 for the 7k run and eight kids for the Youth Run.

The Harvest Run for Hunger is a point-to-point event, which means it starts in one location and ends at another. The race takes place mostly on asphalt, but a small portion takes the participants on gravel through a scenic, wooded area.

The event will begin at Zion Lutheran, 7126 SW 92nd St., rural Ellendale, and conclude at Pontoppidan. Transportation shuttles will be provided at the end of the race.

Participants are encouraged to pre-register, and can obtain a registration form online at www.harvestrunforhunger.com.

Entry fee for the 4K walk is $20. Entry fee for the 7K run is $25, if are purchased before September 13. All fees increase by $5 after the deadline.

Money raised will be supplemented by Thrivent Financial and will help give support to local food shelves and others that require much needed help in the local communities.

Registration on race day is from 7-8 a.m. Those who register on race day may not be guaranteed a T-shirt.

Registration for the Youth Run will take place on race day only from 7:30-7:50 a.m. at Zion Lutheran. The Youth Run is open to those 10 and under. There is no registration fee for the Youth Run, which begins at 8 a.m.

All participants must meet at Zion Lutheran 30 minutes prior to the start of their event. Walkers should be at the church no later than 8 a.m. and runners no later than 8:30 a.m. Walkers will be transported to the Town Hall to begin the 4K walk between 8:00- :15, and at 9 the runners will begin the 7K run.

There will be a water station at approximately at the halfway point of the 7k run.

Awards will be presented to both male and female participants in several age groups at the conclusion of the event at the Pontoppidan Lutheran.

New this year will be the performance of Stix of Fury, a champion drum group from Blooming Prairie, at the conclusion of the run.

Participants, as well as supporters, are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, as well as monetary donations to help out this cause.  If you are unable to attend, monetary donations are welcome and should be sent to Harvest Run For Hunger, P.O. Box 64, Hope, MN 56046.

The Harvest Run organizers continue to be thankful for the generous participants and sponsors. Many are looking forward to seeing great friends from past events and welcoming new friends.

Poverty and hunger exists, regardless of race, age or gender.

Together, we can make a difference.
