With raindrops falling on heads, making events like garage sales inconvenient, it was interesting to hear no complaints during opening day of Ellendale Days Friday, July 20. The rain was a blessing from God. The community celebration was on.

It was a busy week in Ellendale and people were appreciative. There was something for everybody and some new events.

What's interesting about Ellendale Days is that it’s organized and planned by many or most of the town’s residents and business owners.

Of course there is food and music. Thursday night offered the ever-pleasant Laverne’s Concertina Band.

Friday started with a bang with more food, including the Sportsmen’s Club food stand. There were many attractions, including a "Paint Till You Faint" event.

United Methodist Church provided lots of good things to eat with a bake sale and taco supper. Friday also included a free street dance at Ellendale Municipal Liquor Store with music by “Urban Myth.”

Ellendale Days added a new event, dodge ball, to their lineup this year. Seven teams participated at the Ellendale School.

Teams and their coaches were: Sequoia, Nathan Jensen; Ellendale Fire Department, Mark Lee; Big Wagon Boys #1, Dan Lewer; Big Wagon Boys # 2, Bud Olson; Brady Jensen Team, Brady Jensen; Wenzmen, Matt Holland; and Self Confident, Shannon Rhoades.

Holland’s Wenzmen squad won the tournament.

The Ellendale Lions Club provided the opportunity to play bingo under the tent by Ellendale Liquor this year. Scott Groth and Randy Schott were the callers.

The NOW — Nourish, Outreach and Witness — Committee organized the Ellendale Has Talent at Ellendale United Methodist Church Friday night. Taking top honors was Emily Crabtree, daughter of Scott and Melanie Crabtree. Emily shared jokes and sang "Gary, Indiana!" from "The Music Man."

One of the talents featured was Emily and Larry Otto’s niece, Bailey Wacholz, daughter of Pam and Duane Wacholz of Nisswa. Pam grew up in Ellendale and her family likes to come back home for home town events. Bailey is currently Minnesota's Outstanding Teen.

A number of other individuals provided some great talent.

Saturday opened with more precious rain water dripping on customers who didn't seem to mind as they shopped at the Farmers Market. And what’s more fun than a yard or used-a-bit sale? Lots of them!

First Lutheran Youth served super ice cream cones and blizzards not far from the Family Fun Zone, where kids could play any number of games and contests for prizes. Vendors were also available for face-painting and concessions. There were also the annual Hot Dog Eating Contest and Car Show.

The Saturday afternoon parade "up Main Street" was hot, but good. The local Veterans group led the way and the NRHEG Band and the Blooming Prairie "Sticks" percussion unit provided great performances.

James Thompson was selected as the grand marshal for the parade and he had his granddaughter, Kristine, and great-granddaughters, Sophia and Sierra, ride with him.

The Ellendale Commercial Club served a pork chop supper. Youth were invited to a dance at the community building Saturday night.

Sunday morning was time to rise and shine at the Lions Club pancake breakfast. People were also invited to the Vibrant Life worship services behind the Municipal Liquor Store.

Last but not least, the Lions Club sponsored a Tractor Pull near the bus garage.

Another successful Ellendale Days weekend event is now in the books.
