The New Richland City Council had all members in attendance when Mayor Tom McShane convened the first meeting of July 2012 Monday evening.

The agenda and consent agenda were approved. Notable items on the consent agenda included the purchase of equipment damaged at Legion Field in the 2010 September flood event. The council gave the go-ahead to obtain a slush machine, refrigerator, microwaves, cheese dispenser, food warmer and hot dog steamer. All of the equipment is commercial grade and the funds for the purchase came from FEMA flood relief money.

The council next approved Resolution 12-13 which accepts donations from the New Richland Area Foundation Fund and By the Grace of God Funds. The amount included $1,000 each to the reserve accounts of the Ambulance, Fire and Police departments; $250 to the Resident Council at the Care Center; $1,000 to Legion Field and City Parks; and $3,600 for library equipment for the City Library.

Police Chief Scott Eads noted 114 calls for service and 59 additional contacts for the month of June.

“June was extremely busy,” said Eads. “However, not a single call was received on July 4th for either in town or at the lake.”

The recently completed Farm and City Days celebration was unremarkable from a law enforcement standpoint. Eads reported a couple of minor incidents which were handled on the spot.

City maintenance supervisor Ryan Nissen presented two estimates for demolition of the City Park restrooms and an estimate for a replacement building. The building would be similar to the facility at Loon Lake Park in Waseca. A somewhat lengthy discussion followed as to the feasibility of replacing or repairing the existing structure. More cost estimates will be obtained for a future meeting.

Nissen also suggested the need for more picnic tables in the parks. He provided estimates for metal frames which do not include the wood. The council approved the purchase of two trash receptacles for St. Olaf Lake Park.

The council gave its permission to a request from Jackie Skalicky for a Farmer’s Market at the City Park. Days of the week and times are yet to be determined.

The next meeting of the New Richland City Council will be July 23 at 6:30 p.m.
