McDonough, Baynes families mourn losses

Tragedy twice struck New Richland last week.

Sue McDonough, vacationing out of state with her husband Mike, died Friday after a pontoon boat she was aboard overturned in high winds Thursday evening. Her 10-year-old granddaughter, Zoe, also perished in the accident.

New Richland native Michael Baynes, son of Joanie Baynes, was killed in a car accident in Minneapolis Friday afternoon.

According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, McDonough and her granddaughter were among 12 people on board a double-deck pontoon, which was heading for shore when it struck a wave and high winds and was flipped over front-to-back.

According to the Times Free Press: “Friends and neighbors tried to save them and got 10 other people who were on the boat safely to shore. Local stockbroker Mike Brown and his son, Michael, took their boat to the accident scene and pulled the child and her grandmother from the water.”

The accident happened at Pumphouse Slough near Island Cove Marina off state Highway 58.

Shelly Bradbury of the Times Free Press wrote a Sunday article on the McDonoughs. It included: “Family and friends say Zoe Madeline McDonough was a smart young girl with a passion for music, dance and her Girl Scout Brownies troop. Her grandmother, Susan McDonough, is remembered as optimistic, well-loved and a dedicated church member. Zoe was a rising fifth-grader at Westview Elementary School. Zoe loved to sing and dance and recently performed a dance with three other girls in a school talent show. She was a straight-A student. Zoe was very involved with Brownies Troop No. 40507, and enjoyed playing volleyball and soccer. She wanted to become an art teacher. Susan McDonough often took her granddaughters to church with her, Vista Lutheran Church interim pastor Paul Meierding said. He said Susan played a major role in the church. ‘Sue was so positive and so appreciative,’ he said. ‘She was just well-loved in the congregation. This is just a huge shock.’”

Baynes, 55, had a Masters degree and most recently served as Associate Director for Student Life and Adjunct Professor at St. Catherine University in Minneapolis.

Services for Baines are Friday, July 13 at 2 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in New Richland.

Funeral services for McDonough and her granddaughter, Zoe, will be Saturday, July 14 at 2 p.m. at Vista Lutheran Church, rural New Richland.
