Geneva City Council members convened their monthly meeting on March 8 at 7 p.m., with Mayor Steve Bailey calling the meeting to order. All councilmen and women were present except Richard Weckwerth.

Councilman Taff Worrell made a motion to approve meeting minutes, financial reports and bills payable. Without delay, Jannell Tufte seconded and the motion carried.

City Clerk, Nancy Cornelius, then provided an update from the Steele County Cooperative. After corresponding with co-op representative Syd Briggs, no new information is available at this time. The ball is still rolling however, as their retained lawyers continue to iron out the logistics.

The Verizon Wireless Internet update included much discussion about cost comparison. Based on similar situations in neighboring areas, the council unanimously concurred that an offer of $1500 for the lease agreement is not satisfactory.

Cornelius will send a note to Amy Dresch, a liaison with Verizon, stating their hopes for a larger amount. All agreed $2500 would be a suitable amount, so now negotiations can proceed from there.

However, seeing as Jaguar Communications may be a better Internet option, the council concluded that they would like to delay signing a new lease agreement with Verizon at this time. Bailey concluded the topic by saying, “Let’s see what Verizon is going to offer before we do anything.”

Councilman Jim Beenken made a motion to approve a building permit for Tyson Foods. Worrell seconded the motion and it carried, allowing the 20x 20 building to be replaced after suffering tornado damage.

Late items included Fire Chief Greg Bartsch relaying the stats of Ellendale’s 2010 Ambulance Service report. Of the record-setting 153 ambulance runs, Geneva accounted for 25 in the annual report.

Bartsch informed the council of the cost for a single ambulance call. Standard cost is $500 plus $10 per loaded mile, if transport occurs. With any Gold Cross involvement, then the cost also raises $300.

He also made all present aware that Geneva bought a new ambulance. It will be a month or so before it will be painted, stocked and inspected by the state.

Cornelius made one final note about Geneva Community Center’s old chairs. When warmer weather arrives, she hopes to have a sidewalk sale out in front of the community center. Any interested parties may come purchase the chairs at a very low price.

With no further business, Tufte made a motion to adjourn. Worrell seconded, which concluded the meeting. The Geneva City Council will reconvene on April 12, 2011 at 7 p.m.
