It’s been a tough start to the season for the New Richland Reds amateur baseball team, which lost its first four games. The Reds fell 9-3 to the Waterville Indians and, in the Elko/New Market tournament, lost 6-5 to Spooner, Wis., 20-8 to New Market and 5-4 to the Metro Knights.
This week, the Reds host the Cleveland Spiders Wednesday at 7:30, play Friday at 7:30 at Blue Earth and Sunday at 2 p.m. at Minnesota Lake. They’re scheduled to host Hayfield Tuesday, June 25 at 7:30 and entertain Wells Wednesday, June 26 at 7:30.

Schiltz earns two state medals

NRHEG’s T.J. Schiltz started the 2013 track and field season with high hopes.
They were fulfilled.
Schiltz brought home two medals from the state meet June 7-8 at Hamline University in St. Paul, finishing fifth in the Class A 1600 meters and eighth in the 3200.
Schiltz, who has twice qualified for state in cross country, solidified himself as one of the top distance runners in the state entering his senior season.
“It feels pretty good,” said Schiltz. “It adds fuel to the fire, as they would say.”

Mangskau, Schue selected Senior Athletes of the Year

Senior Athletes of the Year and spring sports award winners were announced for NRHEG during the annual ceremony in the high school gym in New Richland last Thursday.
Senior Athlete of the Year plaques were presented to Raelin Schue and Nic Mangskau. Schue was out for volleyball, basketball and track and field. Mangskau’s sports were football, basketball and baseball.
