As of Tuesday, the New Richland Jazz American Legion baseball team remains alive in the West Sub-District Tournament.

The Jazz won a play-in game Sunday at home against Medford. They were shut out 10-0 at Rochester Monday night and were scheduled to play at Dodge Center Wednesday.

New Richland will be the site of sub-district games on Friday at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 3, 5 and 7 p.m. at Legion Field.

The Quad Cities Baseball Association 12-and-under Black baseball team has qualified for the South Central Youth Baseball League state tournament.

The locals earned the berth by virtue of their first-place 6-2-1 league record through July 3. QCBA also had another 12-and-under team, the Red squad, which finished 4-3-1 in league play.

The 12-and-under state tournament is July 26-28 at Owatonna.

Apparently, T.J. Schiltz wasn’t ready to take a break after winning two medals in the recent Minnesota State High School Track and Field Meet.

The NRHEG student, a senior this fall, turned in a record-setting performance in Saturday’s AAU District Qualifier. Schiltz broke the meet record in the 1500 meters, winning with a time of 4:18. The old record was set in 2005. Schiltz also qualified in the high jump despite arriving late, throwing on his shoes and jumping with no warm-ups. He cleared 5 feet, 6 inches.

Schiltz’s showing qualifies him for the 2013 National Qualifier on June 30 at 8 a.m. in Des Moines, Iowa. From there, if he qualifies, Schiltz would move on to the AAU Junior Olympic Nationals in Ypsalanti, Mich., July 27 to August 3.
