The highlights for the NRHEG baseball team came in the second inning.
It wasn’t enough to extend their season.
The Panthers managed only one run on four hits off St. Peter’s Tom Steidler as they ended their 2013 season with a 7-1 opening-round sub-section loss at St. Peter May 25.
A key, according to Panthers coach Jeff Reese, was three Panther errors that basically gave St. Peter three runs.
Even so, the bats were not hot enough. The Panthers struck out eight times and did not draw a walk.
“We couldn’t hit off a good St. Peter pitcher,” said Reese.NRHEG scored in the top of the second when Dillon Parpart and Matt Jensen hit consecutive singles. Trevor Tracy laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt and Noah Krell hit a sacrifice fly to score Parpart.
Jensen was 2-for-3 for the game. Casey Rosacker doubled for the Panthers’ other hit.
Nic Mangskau started and finished on the mound for NRHEG. He gave up four earned runs on nine hits, with four walks and five strikeouts.
“Overall, this team made great strides during a difficult season, weather-wise,” said Reese. “It was a fulfilling season in regard to their work ethic and attitude.”
The Panthers, 4-6 in the Gopher Conference, finished 5-10 overall.
Graduating seniors include Mangskau, Rosacker, Brad Claycomb, Johnny White and Kevin Minter.
