As voters prepare for one of the most historic Presidential elections in the nation’s history, there are also a number of local offices to consider.

For the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva School Board, six people have filed for three open seats: Jessica Duffner, Karen Flatness, Rich Mueller, Robert “Kim” Olson, Neil Schlaak and Dan Schmidt. Incumbents not filing for reelection were Michele Moxon, Mike Moen and Lori Routh.

Three seats are open on the New Richland City Council. Filing for four-year council terms were incumbent Sarah Sundve and Chad Neitzel. Incumbent Sandra Neumann filed for a two-year term. Incumbent councilman John Hullopter is not seeking re-election. No one filed for mayor of New Richland.

There will be a two-way race for mayor of Ellendale, with Russ Goette challenging incumbent Mark Skroch.

Harvest Run For Hunger’s 7K run, 4K walk, and 10-mile bicycle event, will be held Saturday, Sept. 17. The run will start at 9 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Ellendale and end at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church. The walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Township Hall, and the bike event at 8:45 a.m.

The Harvest Run benefits the local Owatonna and Waseca area food shelves.

A “Team Challenge” trophy will be awarded to the run, walk, or bike team with the most preregistered participants.

Registration forms are available online at harvestrunforhunger.com and raceberryjam.com (under “Road Races”).

In July, the Ellendale City Council voted in favor of the health of the children of Ellendale by making our city parks tobacco free. Effective immediately, no person will be allowed to use any form of tobacco under this new policy. Community members attended the initial council meeting in support of this policy.

Ellendale City Council members adopted this policy because they believe that tobacco use in park areas is detrimental to the health of everyone using the park system and can be offensive to those using recreational facilities. They also feel the tobacco-free policy provides the opportunity to change community norms around tobacco use and will help to reduce youth tobacco use.

How does it feel to be 100 years old?

According to Alice Miller, not much different than 99.

Miller was asked the question Monday, Aug. 22, the day she reached the century mark, a day after a big birthday celebration at the community center in Hartland, where she was born, raised and still lives.

“There were so many people there,” said Miller, who still retains her physical health and mental faculties. “I met so many people I hadn’t seen for many years. A couple of them said, ‘You’re sharp as a tack.’ I remember things pretty good. I’m just a little hard of hearing.”

So, how does it feel to be 100?
