New Richland City Council

By JESSICA LUTGENS
Staff Writer

New Richland police officer Sheila Appel was presented with a plaque recognizing her service with the NRPD during the first city council meeting of the month on Monday, April 8. Appel joined the local police force in September of 2017 and recently accepted a position with the Janesville police department. Chief of police Tony Martens presented the plaque, thanking Appel before reading the police report.

The NRPD responded to 111 calls in March. A purchase request for a new garage door opener was made, with three quotes provided: a 1 ¼ HP Chamberlain for $246.16, ½ HP Chamberlain for $200, or an amped-up ¾ HP residential from Overhead Door for $435. The third option was approved, with the cost including installation and a one-year warranty.

Residents using golf carts on city streets are reminded that 2019 permits are required and can be obtained at city hall. This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week, and emergency sirens will be sounded on Thursday, April 11. The report was approved.

For a change, Russ Goette looked up from his mayor’s seat and saw a lot of people in the Ellendale City Council chambers.

“I want to thank everyone for coming tonight,” he said at the start of the Thursday, Feb. 28 council meeting. “It’s nice to have a crowd.”

NRHEG Superintendent Dale Carlson, elementary principal Doug Anderson and school board member Richard Mueller were there to promote the district’s $9.1 million bond referendum set for April 9. They distributed brochures to be sent to everyone in the school district with information on the referendum.

“We’ve spent a lot of time since the last (failed) referendum in 2015,” said Carlson. “We’ve sent out surveys, we’ve had special meetings. The referendum is really borne out of responses from that survey. Some tough decisions had to be made by the school board.”

Passage of the referendum would benefit the school and students in four ways, outlined on Page 4 of the brochure: 1. Improve safety and security; 2. Support facility repairs; 3. Renew code upgrades and compliance; 4. Provide classrooms that support curriculum requirements.

Appointment times are from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Ellendale Area Heritage Society has become aware that the Patterson Bros. graves have no grave marker of any kind. The Sexton does have a directory to locate the site, but that’s it. We would like to place a marker, as pictured above, to mark the spot. The brothers are side by side, so one stone will suffice; it will cost $800. Would you help us?

Morris and Wallace came to our area in 1893 under the direction of a prognosticator in Philadelphia, who foretold that gold could be found at the designated place. They spent their entire lives, education and talent, even to the exclusion of families and world comforts, to find that elusive gold.

This coming Ellendale Days, during our History Tour to be held June 29, this gold mine story in its entirety will be one of three stories we will tell. Mark that day on your calendar and find out the whole story of Ellendale’s goldmine, at Ellendale Days, June 29 in the park starting at 12:30.
