New Richland City Council

By JESSICA LUTGENS
Staff Writer

New Richland police officer Sheila Appel was presented with a plaque recognizing her service with the NRPD during the first city council meeting of the month on Monday, April 8. Appel joined the local police force in September of 2017 and recently accepted a position with the Janesville police department. Chief of police Tony Martens presented the plaque, thanking Appel before reading the police report.

The NRPD responded to 111 calls in March. A purchase request for a new garage door opener was made, with three quotes provided: a 1 ¼ HP Chamberlain for $246.16, ½ HP Chamberlain for $200, or an amped-up ¾ HP residential from Overhead Door for $435. The third option was approved, with the cost including installation and a one-year warranty.

Residents using golf carts on city streets are reminded that 2019 permits are required and can be obtained at city hall. This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week, and emergency sirens will be sounded on Thursday, April 11. The report was approved.

Chris Schlaak presented the ambulance report, which stated that there were 35 runs in March and six so far this month, bringing the total number of runs for the year to 76. The ambulance rig experienced another issue on March 15, which has since been fixed. The rig, purchased last year, is under warranty and has been fixed four times since going into use. The plan is to continue to make repairs as needed.

An application to join the ambulance was declined due to concerns regarding the individual’s background and city liability. The two newest members have one month left of EMT classes before they test out, and Schlaak explained to them the ambulance’s social media policy. The report was approved.

The fire department made a purchase request for new brakes, rotors and tires for the brush truck at a cost of $2,400, which was approved.

The six-month review of care center administrator Larry Passel is to be scheduled for this month. Mayor Mike Shurson and council member and care center liaison Sarah Sundve will be on the review panel along with members of the care center board. In Passel’s last review, a list of things to work on was given, and progress in those areas will be looked at during the review. The meeting adjourned at 6:54 p.m.
