The first-ever NRHEG High School Snow Week is set for February 4-9.

Highlights of the week include coronation of the Snow Week royalty at 2:15 Monday in the high school gym, a talent contest Friday at 12:30 and a dance Saturday night.

“The Snow Week activities should be a nice way to bring some excitement to the long, cold weeks of winter,” said NRHEG Student Council Advisor Sandy Schumacher. “It will be a great chance to highlight some of the talents our students have worked so hard to develop. During the days of snow week, it will be fun to see the costumes people find for the dress-up days. As far as the dance, it's nice to provide a social opportunity where our students can have fun, but a lot of variables can be kept under control. This whole event is new for NRHEG, so we hope everything goes well for all concerned. We appreciate the interest and support we are getting from people in the communities.”

10-year milestone

Bernard reaches ‘tin’ anniversary for newspaper column

Ten years is quite a milestone: It’s the average lifespan of a microwave oven, the “tin” wedding anniversary, and nearly 120 times longer than the reign of King Umberto II of Italy. It’s also how long Mark Bernard has been dedicating his time and talent to the pages of the New Richland Star and NRHEG Star Eagle.

Bernard began with the paper when it was under the ownership of LaVonne Meyer. His first piece was an agricultural article he volunteered to write. The next week he was asked to submit another one, and Mark has continued to volunteer ever since. This is an unexpected accomplishment for someone who was self-taught when it comes to computers and keyboarding.

According to Bernard, “Small town newspapers are still an important part of the community and rural life.”

8th-graders wow board with iPad demos

NRHEG School Board

By REED WALLER

Staff Writer

Invasion of the iPads

Visiting the NRHEG school board for their January 22 meeting were Technology Coordinator Angie Aaseth with a group of a dozen eighth grade students to present a demonstration of progress on the district’s iPad Initiative. Also on hand were high school English teacher Mark Domeier and math teacher Sharon Ramaker, plus numerous parents and friends.

In May the board approved a motion to go ahead with an iPad Initiative trial program. One grade (eighth grade) would be supplied with iPads, and the technology would be integrated into their learning program. If significant results were visible in the first year, the board would continue the program one or two grades per year, ultimately to provide iPads to all 7-12 students.

Are significant results visible yet? Students, teachers and board members were presented with some impressive evidence.

New dates for Ellendale Days?

Ellendale City Council

By SCOTT GROTH

Contributing Writer

The Ellendale City Council met Thursday January 24, with Mayor Swearingen and all council members present. Also in attendance for the meeting was City Attorney Phil Kohl; Steve Louks, City Clerk; Pete Paulson, manager at Municipal Liquor Store; Kristie Blaschko, Jim and Rita Nelson, Steve Hackett and Donovan Eaker.

Paulson asked the council what could be done to maybe change the weekend of the Ellendale Days celebration. Paulson commented that in 2012 when the celebration was held, Geneva Liquor was also having their annual “Johnny Holmes Band” on Saturday evening.

Paulson told the council that because of having to book the “Johnny Holmes Band” a year in advance, Geneva Liquor will be having him again on the third weekend in July. Traditionally, the third weekend in July is when Ellendale Days is scheduled.

Wrestlers fourth at Chisago Lakes

Logan, Parpart, Erickson reach finals as 12 of 13 Panthers place in tourney

By DALE KUGATH

LINDSTROM – Coach Paul Cyr’s New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva wrestling squad is starting to show signs of life. However, the lack of consistency still concerns Cyr.

“Our overall success and effort was better,” said Cyr. “We are still lacking the consistency from match to match and wrestler to wrestler that we hope for, especially by this point in the season.”

NRHEG competed in an eight team tourney at Lindstrom Friday. Hutchinson racked up 234.5 points to win the Chisago Lakes Tourney. NRHEG scored 133 to finish fourth.

The Panthers did not have any individual winners, but 12 of 13 NRHEG wrestlers managed to place. The Panthers were a combined 16-18 for the day. NRHEG was able to enter two wrestlers at 106 and 220 pounds.
