Korean War veterans eligible for peace medal

Written by

Many veterans who served in the Korean War are eligible for the Korean “Ambassador for Peace” Medal from the Republic of South Korea. They can apply for the medal through the South Korean Consulate in Chicago.

To apply for the medal, veterans who served in Korea during the war can fill out an application and mail it to the consulate, or they can call her and she will mail or email the application directly to the veteran.

The medal is currently out of stock, but the Consulate will send the medal to eligible veterans who apply once they receive new stock (likely May or June).

The special medal is available to those who served from June 25, 1950 to March 1955.

‘Pinocchio’ shows dedicated to Markus

Written by

NRHEG Elementary will team up with two professional actors this weekend to present Prairie Fire Children’s theatre’s original musical version of the classic tale, “Pinocchio.”

“Pinocchio,” with script by Robert Gribas, original music by Angela Rinaidi Gribas, and costume and set design by Deborah Nelson Pick, continues Prairie Fire’s tradition of presenting classic tales as you’ve never seen them before.  From the Enchanted Forest of the Blue Fairy to the Isle of Fun, follow Pinocchio’s adventures as he learns what it means to be a real boy.

An exciting opportunity to lead the Minnesota Agricultural Interpretive Center, Farmamerica, is open for applications and nominations.

Executive Director Jim Gibson is retiring from the part-time position in June, after serving in the role since July 1, 2009. The Farmamerica Board of Directors will consider applications based on educational attainment, agricultural experience, people skills, and interests in education and member development.

By the time Carlie Wagner played in the all-star girls’ basketball game at Carleton College in Northfield Saturday, she was tired.

By the end, she was joyous — along with a good portion of Panther Nation.

Wagner, an NRHEG High School senior and one of the nation’s top basketball recruits, captured perhaps the most noteworthy honor given to a high school player as she was announced Minnesota’s Miss Basketball for 2014.

It followed, coincidentally, a game in which Wagner’s team lost 102-85 while she scored 30 points.

But that wasn’t the moment everyone was waiting for.

The New Richland City Council held its second meeting of April on Monday, the 28th. All members were present except Amy Ihrke. The agenda and consent agenda were both approved, with one addition for a request added.

A guest was in attendance to request the purchase and installation of new “Panther Nation” signs to take the place of the current “Welcome to New Richland” signs outside of town. There will be two signs per entrance. The signs will also recognize the Panther girls’ basketball state championships for 2013 and 2014, and the state champion Panther cheerleading squad. The project will be completed by students at NRHEG High School. The council approved the request.

Forum on emerging drug trends May 13 Ellendale’s UM Church

Synthetic drugs, including K2, Spice, bath salts, and Scooby Snax, are an emerging issue in our communities. These drugs threaten the health and safety of our youth.

The problem

Drug abuse is one of the most hidden and pervasive risks to adolescents today. Young people are dying from drug overdoses.  At the same time, many parents have no idea about today's variety of drugs, their accessibility, their effects, and how to talk about it with their children.

Confirming rumors that have swirled since before this year’s state tournament, John Schultz made it official last week.

He’s resigning as New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva head girls’ basketball coach.

It was a difficult decision for Schultz, who guided the Panthers to three straight state tournament appearances and a second consecutive state championship in March, but, after much consultation with family members, he felt it was the right thing to do.

“It’s a family decision,” he said. “It certainly has nothing to do with talent. People may think that with the senior class graduating, I’m bailing.”

But that’s not the case.
